Chapter 6 - Grandma Eleanor’s ConfessionThe ink on the heavy parchment seemed to burn under the dim light of our living room lamp as I read the words aloud, my voice trembling uncontrollably.

“My dearest Darcy,

If you are reading this, it means you have found someone worthy of your heart, and Frank has safely delivered into your hands the only tangible piece of truth I have left to give you.

For years, I watched your parents mold Vanessa into an entitled monster while systematically breaking your spirit. I tried to intervene, but your mother and father built an impenetrable wall of isolation around you. They made you believe you were the burden, while Vanessa was the golden child who could do no wrong.

But the favoritism runs much deeper than bad parenting, Darcy. It is rooted in a lie.

Twenty-eight years ago, when your mother gave birth to you girls just weeks apart from another tragedy in our family, a financial agreement was struck. Your father’s real estate business was on the brink of total bankruptcy. To bail him out, a wealthy, ruthless business associate named Julian Vance—no relation to us, though he shared the name—offered a massive cash injection under one chilling condition: that your family ensure Vanessa would always be provided for as the primary heir to everything your father owned, no matter the cost to anyone else.

Your father didn't just sell out his business, Darcy. He sold you out.

The trust fund that was supposed to secure your college education and your future? Your parents liquidated it when you were eighteen and handed it over to cover one of Vanessa’s failed business ventures, lying to you and telling you the bank account had expired due to clerical errors.

I tried to stop them. When I threatened to rewrite my will and leave my entire estate directly to you, your mother and father cut off my access to you for three full years. They told you I didn't want to see you. They lied to keep us apart.

This bracelet is the only family heirloom that legally belongs to you—free and clear of any trusts or liens. Do not let them take it. And do not let them rewrite your worth.

With all my love, Grandma Eleanor”

The parchment slipped from my numb fingers, fluttering softly onto the hardwood floor.

Marcus picked it up, his jaw clenching as his eyes scanned the final paragraphs. When he finished reading, his face was dark with suppressed rage.

“Those absolute monsters,” Marcus whispered, his voice shaking. “They lied to you your entire life. They stole your trust fund, they lied about your grandmother, and they treated you like a second-class citizen in your own home.”

“It all makes sense now,” I sobbed, burying my face in my hands. “Every time I succeeded, every time I built something for myself, they acted like I was stealing the spotlight from Vanessa because... because in their twisted minds, Vanessa was the only one legally or financially insured by my father’s old debts.”

“Not anymore,” Marcus said, his voice dropping into a fierce, protective register. “Your grandmother gave this to you for a reason. She wanted you to know the truth. And we are going to use every single word of this letter to blow their fragile little world apart.”
