Chapter 3 - Michael’s Confession(Length: ~1800 words)

When I woke up the next morning, the hospital room was quiet except for the gentle hum of the IV drip.

Daniel sat in the armchair by the window, his head in his hands. Aunt Helen was pacing quietly near the door. When she saw my eyes open, she hurried over, pouring a cup of ice water and holding a straw to my lips.

“Easy, sweetheart,” Helen murmured, brushing a strand of hair from my forehead. “Detective Miller is outside. He wants to talk to you about Michael’s statement, but only if you feel up to it.”

I nodded slowly, my throat tight. “Let him in.”

Detective Miller entered, followed by a younger officer carrying a digital recorder. Miller pulled up a chair beside the bed.

“Mrs. Vance, I know this is devastating,” Miller began gently. “Let me explain what your brother-in-law brought to us last night. Michael Foster reached a breaking point during that toast. He told us he had no idea what Martha and Rebecca were doing four months ago when they caused your miscarriage. He only discovered the truth three days ago when he found a hidden ledger and chemical vials in Rebecca’s vanity drawer.”

“Why didn't he go to the police then?” I asked, tears spilling hot down my cheeks.

“Because Rebecca threatened him,” Miller replied. “She told him if he ruined her baby shower or exposed her, she would ruin his career, frame him for embezzlement at his architectural firm, and ensure he never saw their child. But when Rebecca publicly mocked your dead baby yesterday—right after pushing you off a balcony—Michael snapped. He realized he was married to a psychopath.”

Miller opened the manila folder and showed me copies of text messages between my mother, Martha, and my sister, Rebecca.

Date: Four months ago.

Martha: Did she take the morning supplement?

Rebecca: Yes. Mom, are you sure this won't trace back to us? The vet said it's completely undetectable in standard autopsies once metabolized.

Martha: Stop panicking. Elizabeth having a baby ruins the inheritance distribution under your grandfather's trust. Once she miscarries, the primary estate reverts back to our direct line. Just make sure she drinks the tea.

I stared at the glowing screen of the tablet Miller held. The words blurred behind a wall of blinding tears. My own mother. The woman who taught Sunday school, who sat on charity boards, who preached about family values—she had murdered my unborn child over a clause in a real estate trust.

“And my father?” I choked out. “Did John know?”

Miller’s face hardened. “Your father signed off on the trust reallocation legal documents two days before your miscarriage. He didn't administer the chemicals, but he knew exactly why your mother was doing it. He is being charged as an accessory before the fact to second-degree murder and conspiracy.”

Daniel stood up from his chair, his fists clenched so tightly his fingernails dug into his palms. “They’re monsters, Liz. They’re absolute monsters. I swear to God, I will spend every penny I have to make sure they rot in federal prison until the day they die.”

“They won't just rot in prison, Daniel,” Aunt Helen said coldly, her eyes flashing with fury. “Because once the financial auditors start digging into the Harrison family estate, we are going to strip them of every single cent they own.”
