Chapter 4 - The Uninvited Assembly

I didn’t tap the brakes. I laid on the horn, the sharp, continuous blare echoing off the stone bluffs.

The woman with the clipboard jumped, dropping her tablet onto the gravel. The crew members froze, turning their heads as my Porsche pulled within two feet of their rear bumper.

I stepped out of the vehicle, leaving the engine running and the door wide open.

"Get off my property," I said.

The woman hurried over, adjusting her earpiece, flashing a polished, Hollywood-agent smile that carried zero warmth. "Hi there! Are you the estate manager? I’m Chloe from *Vanguard Digital Staging*. We’re the exclusive production team for Olivia Vance’s *Bridal Lux* special. We’re doing the advance lighting rigging for the pool deck tonight."

"I am not the estate manager," I replied, standing tall. "I am Harper Vance. I am the sole owner of this property. You are trespassing on private land."

Chloe blinked, then pulled up a file on her tablet with an exasperated chuckle. "Oh! You must be the sister. Olivia told us you might be a little... territorial. But we have a fully executed commercial event lease and municipal staging permit approved by the county zoning board. We’re fully authorized to begin load-in seventy-two hours prior to the principal ceremony."

"That permit was obtained through criminal forgery," I said, holding her gaze without flinching. "I did not sign that agreement. My legal team is filing an emergency cease-and-desist at the county courthouse tomorrow morning."

Chloe’s professional mask slipped, revealing a sharp, defensive edge. "Look, Miss Vance, I don't get involved in family drama. I have twenty thousand dollars worth of rented lighting equipment on those trucks and a strict union crew schedule. We have an ironclad contract signed by Aura Events & Co. with your legal name as the deed grantor. Unless a uniformed officer hands me a temporary restraining order, we’re loading in. Now, could you please enter the gate code so we can clear the road?"

"If any of your trucks cross that gate, I will have every vehicle impounded for felony trespass," I said. "And if one worker sets a boot on my lawn, I will press charges against your company for criminal liability."

"You can't do that!" Chloe barked, her voice rising. "We paid a twenty-five-thousand-dollar site deposit to Aura Events!"

"Then you’d better call Aura Events and ask for your money back. Because you’re not entering these gates."

I stepped past her, punched the six-digit master override on my security panel, drove my car through the widening iron gates, and hit the immediate close button before Chloe could even signal her drivers.

From the rearview mirror, I watched the steel gates slam shut with a heavy, magnetic thud. Chloe was pacing furiously outside, speaking rapidly into her phone.

I drove up the winding driveway to my sanctuary. The house sat atop the ridge—a breathtaking structure of modern glass, cedar wood, and dark volcanic stone, framing the Pacific Ocean stretching endlessly into the sunset. It had taken me four years of grueling corporate warfare to buy this land and build this home. It was supposed to be my peace.

Instead, it was turning into a fortified compound.

Inside, I locked all automated doors, drew the motorized shades, and pulled up my external security feeds. The two production vans were still parked at the end of the road, blocking my gate.

My phone chimed on the granite counter.

It wasn't Olivia. It wasn't my mother.

It was the unknown number that had texted me about the property records.

*“Check your front gate camera. The dark gray Audi behind the vans. Come down alone.”*

My breath caught. I switched the surveillance feed to the wide-angle street camera. Parked fifty yards behind the production vans, tucked under the shadow of a large live oak, was a dark gray Audi sedan.

I hesitated. Was it another ambush? A process server? A tabloid photographer?

I typed back: *“Who are you?”*

A reply arrived within five seconds:

May you like

*“I’m Julian Cross. Mark’s brother. And if you don't talk to me tonight, your sister is going to drag you and Mark into a federal fraud indictment.”*
