Chapter 3 - THE CANCELLATION FALLOUTSaturday morning dawned bright and clear, but inside my parents’ grand estate in the historic district of the city, a storm was brewing.

At precisely 6:15 AM, my father, Richard, was standing in his marble foyer, dressed in a custom-tailored Italian linen suit, holding a crystal tumbler of scotch. Beside him stood my mother, Eleanor, draped in designer travel wear, checking her diamond-encrusted watch with growing irritation. Vanessa was lounging on the velvet settee, tapping away on her phone, complaining that her designer luggage was too heavy.
The black car was supposed to arrive at 6:00 AM to whisk them away to JFK for their first-class Emirates flight to Barcelona.
By 6:30 AM, there was still no car in the driveway.
Frustrated, Richard marched to the front door, pulled it open, and looked up and down the quiet suburban street. Nothing. Not even a stray cab.
Richard reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone, and dialed the private direct number for Apex Global Concierge—the same number I had called twelve hours earlier.
According to later reports from the concierge service manager, the conversation went something like this:
“This is Richard Sterling,” my father barked into the phone when the agent answered. “Where is the black car I was promised for my party’s transfer to JFK? We have first-class tickets on Flight 201 to Barcelona departing in four hours, and your driver is already thirty minutes late. This is completely unacceptable for a VIP service!”
The concierge agent on the other line—a senior manager named Marcus—paused, reviewing the terminal screen.
“Mr. Sterling?” Marcus asked cautiously. “Let me pull up your file... one moment, please.”
A tense silence filled the marble foyer as Richard tapped his Italian leather shoe against the floor, glaring at his watch.
“Sir?” Marcus’s voice came back through the receiver, sounding slightly strained. “I’m looking at the account for Booking Reference #APX-99842. According to our system, this reservation was canceled last night at 11:45 PM.”
Richard stopped tapping his shoe. His brow furrowed in utter confusion. “Canceled? What are you talking about? Who canceled it? I certainly didn't!”
“The cancellation was authorized and executed directly by the account holder and primary financier, Mr. Arthur Sterling,” Marcus replied smoothly.
Richard’s face flushed a dark, mottled red. He pulled the phone away from his ear for a second, stared at it in disbelief, and then slammed it back to his mouth.
“That’s impossible!” Richard roared, his voice echoing off the foyer walls. “My son paid for this trip as our anniversary gift! He would never cancel it! There’s been a clerical error on your end! Fix it right now, or I’ll have my lawyers sue your agency into bankruptcy!”
“Mr. Sterling,” Marcus said, his tone turning crisp and professional, refusing to be bullied. “There is no error. Mr. Arthur Sterling called our priority desk personally last night. He explicitly ordered the cancellation of all first-class flights, the Owner’s Suites aboard the cruise liner, and all private ground transfers. Furthermore, he explicitly instructed us to retain all deposits with zero refunds requested.”
Richard staggered backward a half-step, nearly spilling his scotch. “Zero... zero refunds? He canceled the whole thing? Without telling us?!”
“That is correct, sir. If you wish to travel today, you will need to book your own arrangements through commercial ticketing. Have a pleasant morning.”
Click.
The line went dead.
In the foyer, Richard lowered the phone slowly from his ear, his hand trembling slightly. Eleanor and Vanessa, sensing the shift in the atmosphere, stood up from the settee.
“Richard? What is going on?” Eleanor demanded, her voice rising in alarm. “Where is the car? Why are you looking like that?”
“The trip...” Richard whispered, his voice catching in his throat. “The trip is canceled.”
“Canceled?!” Vanessa shrieked, dropping her phone onto the Persian rug. “What do you mean canceled?! My Gucci luggage is sitting right here! We have Owner’s Suites on a Mediterranean liner! People are expecting us in Barcelona!”
“Arthur,” Richard breathed out, the realization finally hitting him like a physical blow. “Arthur canceled it last night.”

Eleanor’s face contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. “Arthur?! That ungrateful, miserable little worm! After everything we’ve done for him, after raising him, after letting him fund our lifestyle as he damn well should have as our son, he dares pull this stunt on the morning of our anniversary trip?! Because of a little water on his wife’s dress?!”
“Get me my phone,” Eleanor hissed, snatching her handbag from the table. “I’m going to call him right now and tear him a new one. He’s going to reinstate those tickets immediately, or so help me god, he’ll never see his grandchild!”
