Chapter 4 - THE BATTLE LINES ARE DRAWNMy phone started ringing at 7:00 AM sharp while I was sitting at my kitchen island, quietly sipping coffee with Clara.

Clara looked better after a full night of sleep, though the dark circles under her eyes still betrayed the emotional trauma of the previous evening. She looked down at my phone vibrating on the counter, where the caller ID flashed: MOTHER.

“Arthur... your mom is calling,” Clara said softly, her voice hesitant. “Maybe you should answer it. They’re probably panicked about the trip.”

I looked at the screen, picked up the phone, and tapped the reject button, sending her straight to voicemail.

Within thirty seconds, the phone rang again. FATHER.

I rejected that one, too.

Then Vanessa. Rejected.

Then my mother again. Rejected.

I turned the phone on silent, placed it face down on the counter, and looked across at Clara.

“They aren't going to get a single flight, a single suite, or a single red cent from me ever again,” I told her calmly. “And today, we begin dismantling the rest of it.”

Clara’s eyes widened slightly. “What do you mean, Arthur? What are you going to do?”

“For ten years, Clara, I’ve played the role of the dutiful provider for people who despise you,” I said, taking her warm hand in mine. “I paid for Vanessa’s apartment. I paid for my parents’ property taxes. I funded their country club memberships. I thought that if I provided enough, if I earned enough, they would eventually respect my family—my wife, my child. Last night proved they are incapable of respect. They are parasites. And I am cutting off the host.”

Before Clara could reply, the front doorbell began to ring.

It wasn't a polite, standard chime. It was a rapid, aggressive, hammering series of strikes that shook the front door in its frame.

Bang, bang, bang, bang!

I sighed, stood up from the counter, and walked down the hallway. I pulled the door open.

Standing on my front porch were my parents and my sister.

Eleanor looked like a hurricane wrapped in Chanel. Richard stood behind her, his face purple with suppressed rage, while Vanessa was practically hyperventilating with indignation.

“How dare you!” Eleanor shrieked the second the door opened, shoving past me into my entryway without an invitation, followed closely by Richard and Vanessa. “How dare you ignore our calls! Do you have any idea what kind of humiliation we just suffered?! The concierge service told us you canceled our entire Mediterranean cruise!”

I didn't move from the doorway. I leaned my shoulder against the frame, crossing my arms over my chest, looking at them with chilling indifference.

“I did cancel it,” I said evenly.

Richard stepped up, towering over me, pointing a thick finger at my chest. “Are you out of your damn mind, Arthur?! That trip cost a fortune! We invited our closest friends in the social circle to meet us in Monaco! And you just pull the plug over a stupid domestic spat?! Because your clumsy wife couldn't hold a glass of water?!”

“Watch your mouth, Richard,” I said, my voice dropping into a register that made my father physically recoil. সনদ

Richard blinked, stunned by my tone. He had never heard me speak to him without a prefix of subservience.

“You call your wife clumsy,” I continued, stepping into the foyer, towering over my father by three inches, “when your daughter deliberately threw a glass of ice water into the chest of a seven-month pregnant woman for sitting in a chair. You laughed at her. You told her to go eat with the servants in the kitchen.”

“Oh, stop exaggerating!” Vanessa snapped from behind my mother, crossing her arms and rolling her eyes. “It was just a little water! She’s acting like a drama queen for attention! And now she’s ruining our parents' anniversary trip over it! You need to call that concierge right now, Arthur, and rebook those Owner’s Suites. And while you’re at it, pay for our first-class flights to Paris next month to make up for it!”

I stared at Vanessa. I looked at the $3,000 designer handbag slung over her shoulder—a bag I had purchased for her birthday three months ago using corporate bonus funds.

A slow, cold smile spread across my face.

“Paris?” I asked softly. “Vanessa, you won't even be flying to a state park next month.”

Vanessa frowned. “What are you talking about?”

I pulled my phone out of my pocket, unlocked it with a tap, and brought up a spreadsheet.

“Effective 8:00 AM this morning,” I announced clearly, “the corporate lease on your downtown luxury apartment has been terminated. The security deposit has been forfeited to cover cleaning fees, and the landlord has been instructed to lock you out by noon.”

Vanessa’s jaw dropped so fast I thought it might detach. “You... you did what?!”

“And as for you, Mother and Father,” I turned my gaze toward my parents, who were now staring at me as if I had grown a second head. “Your monthly $10,000 allowance for property taxes and maintenance has been permanently cancelled. The automatic bank transfers have been disabled. Furthermore, I have instructed my corporate legal team to audit every single asset currently registered in my name that you have been utilizing.”

Eleanor’s face turned the color of ash. She clutched her pearls. “You... you can’t do that! We are your parents! We raised you! You owe us everything you have!”

“I owe you nothing,” I said, opening the front door wide and gesturing out toward the driveway. “You raised an ATM, not a son. And that ATM is permanently out of service. Get out of my house.”
