Chapter 4 - The Boardroom ConfrontationThe storm outside matched the one raging inside Vance Sterling’s chest.

By 8:00 a.m. the next morning, Vance stormed through the security gates of Sterling Real Estate on Park Avenue, his overcoat billowing behind him like the cloak of an avenging angel. Employees scattered from his path, recognizing the lethal, unapproachable aura that radiated from him.

He didn't stop at his private office. He marched straight down the executive hall toward the glass-walled conference room where the weekly senior leadership meeting was already underway.

Vance threw the double oak doors open with a crash that rattled the crystal water pitchers on the long mahogany table.

Jonathan Thorne looked up from his tablet, a smug, untouchable smile playing on his lips. “Ah, Vance. Right on time. We were just discussing the Vanguard merger timeline—'’

Vance didn't let him finish. He crossed the room in three strides, grabbed Jonathan by the lapels of his designer suit, and hoisted him clean out of his leather chair, slamming him back against the wood-paneled wall with a force that made the framed corporate charters rattle.

Gasps erupted around the table. Several senior vice presidents leaped to their feet in sheer panic.

“Vance! Have you lost your mind?!” Jonathan choked out, clawing at Vance’s hands, his face turning purple.

“You hired a private investigator to harass an innocent woman and a six-year-old child,” Vance hissed, his voice dropping into a deadly, vibrating whisper that froze everyone in the room. “You crossed a line, Jonathan.”

“She’s a gold-digger!” Jonathan wheezed, struggling for air. “The board has a right to protect the company’s assets from—!”

With a grunt of pure disgust, Vance shoved Jonathan away, sending him sprawling backward over his chair onto the carpet. Jonathan scrambled up, coughing and adjusting his collar, his face twisted with furious humiliation.

“You’re finished, Vance!” Jonathan shouted, pointing a shaking finger at him. “You think you can assault a senior partner over a bakery clerk?! I’m calling an emergency meeting of the board right now! We’re stripping you of your CEO voting shares under the moral turpitude clause!”

Vance straightened his cuffs, his expression icy, calm, and utterly terrifying.

“You don't need to call an emergency meeting, Jonathan,” Vance said loudly, turning to address the entire shock-frozen boardroom. “Save yourselves the trouble. I am resigning my position as CEO of Sterling Real Estate, effective immediately.”

Silence slammed over the room. Even Jonathan stopped coughing.

“Resigning?” a senior board member stammered. “Vance, you built this firm! You can't just walk away over a—over a personal relationship!”

“Watch me,” Vance said coldly. He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out his heavy platinum corporate keycard, and tossed it onto the center of the mahogany table, where it skidded to a halt against a silver water pitcher.

“Jonathan wanted my assets protected from outside influence,” Vance continued, his eyes fixed on the terrified vice president. “He’ll be thrilled to know that without my voting shares, the Sterling Trust reverts entirely to the board's independent control. You can keep your glass towers, your mergers, and your petty corporate games.”

Without waiting for another word, Vance turned on his heel and walked out of the boardroom, leaving forty millionaires staring open-mouthed at the empty doorway.

He had just walked away from a four-hundred-and-fifty-million-dollar empire. But as he rode the elevator down to the lobby, he didn't feel regret. For the first time in four years, he felt completely, breathtakingly free.
