Chapter 9 - The Sketchbook’s PromiseBy autumn, our lives had expanded into something richer and more complete than I ever could have imagined in my wildest dreams.

Eleanor Sterling didn't move back to Manhattan; instead, she bought a small, charming cottage three miles down the road, visiting every Sunday for lunch and spending long afternoons sitting on our porch watching Chloe paint watercolors in the garden. The frost between our worlds had thawed into a fragile, genuine affection built on mutual respect and shared healing.

On a crisp October evening, just as the leaves turned brilliant shades of amber and crimson, Vance closed the bakery early.

He told me to put on my emerald-green silk dress—the one Mrs. Gable and Chloe had altered for me months ago—and led me down the winding stone path behind the orchard.

There, nestled under the sprawling canopy of an ancient apple tree strung with warm fairy lights, sat a small wooden table set with crystal, candles, and a steaming plate of homemade pastries.

Standing beside the table was a mannequin draped in a stunning, miniature emerald-green silk dress with a tiny red ribbon on the waistband—and right beside it, resting on a velvet cushion, was a brand-new pair of glossy red leather shoes with a gold star-shaped buckle.

I turned to Vance, my eyes shining with tears. “What is all this?”

Vance reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet box, dropping gracefully onto one knee on the autumn grass.

“Two hundred and ninety-two days ago, I watched a little girl draw a pair of red shoes on the back of a grocery receipt, and I fell in love with her mother,” Vance said, his voice thick with emotion. “I gave up my fortune, my company, and my title, but none of that mattered because you and Chloe gave me the only wealth that has ever truly counted.”

He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a ring—not a massive, ostentatious diamond meant to impress Wall Street, but a delicate, custom-designed platinum band embedded with tiny, glittering rubies that caught the candlelight like stars.

“Nina Morales,” Vance whispered, looking up into my eyes with absolute, unshakeable devotion. “Will you marry me? And let us spend the rest of our lives building our own fairy tale from the ground up?”

May you like

I didn't hesitate. I dropped to my knees in the grass, throwing my arms around his neck, and kissed him with all the love, history, and fierce joy in my heart.

“Yes,” I cried softly against his lips. “A thousand times yes.”
