Chapter 3 - The Shadow AccountantI tumbled onto the leather seat, gasping for breath, ready to scream, strike out, and fight for my life.

“Quiet, Emily. Breathe,” a gravelly, deeply familiar voice murmured right beside my ear.

I snapped my head up.

Sitting right next to me in the dim interior of the sedan was my father, Richard Hayes. But he didn't look like the mild-mannered, cardigan-wearing retired accountant who spent his weekends balancing checkbooks and pruning hydrangeas.

He wore a dark, tactical roll-neck sweater under a tailored charcoal overcoat. Across his lap rested a sleek, matte-black satellite laptop displaying real-time security feeds of our entire estate. In the door pocket beside him sat a heavy, suppressed semi-automatic pistol.

The car lurched forward instantly, tires spitting gravel as the driver—a heavily built man with a scar across his jaw—slammed the accelerator and blew through the side security gate, sending the wrought-iron barrier crashing outward into the bushes.

“Dad!” I sobbed, throwing my arms around his neck. “Dad, they have Mom’s bag! Eleanor was holding it! They said—they said—”

“I know what they said, sweetheart,” my father interrupted, his voice frighteningly steady. He pulled me close, kissing my temple, but his eyes never left the tracking screens on his laptop. “I’ve been watching their surveillance feeds for seventy-two hours. I know every wire transfer they forged and every medical file they falsified.”

I pulled back, staring at him in sheer disbelief. “You knew? You knew Adrian was trying to steal my trust fund and harvest my organs, and you let me walk into that house?”

“I didn't let you walk into anything blind,” my father said, turning his piercing gaze onto mine. “Three months ago, when Adrian insisted you go to that private clinic for your ‘wedding wellness check,’ I intercepted the real blood work before it ever reached their database. The files Adrian has? They’re forged templates. Your actual tissue type is safely encrypted off-site.”

My jaw dropped. “What about the trust fund?”

A slow, grim smile touched the corners of my father’s mouth.

“Adrian thinks he’s getting eight million dollars at midnight tonight,” Dad murmured, tapping a key on his laptop. “What he doesn't know is that two weeks ago, working through a federal shell corporation, I legally drained every single liquid asset out of Blackwood Enterprises and locked them behind an un-revocable federal receivership. As of eight o’clock this morning, Adrian Blackwood is legally, financially, and professionally bankrupt.”

I stared at him, the terrifying scale of what my father had orchestrated finally dawning on me.

“Then why are they still trying to kill me or force me to sign?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“Because of your mother,” Dad’s face darkened, the cold fury returning to his eyes. “Margaret found out yesterday afternoon that Adrian wasn't just after the trust fund. He was laundering cartel capital through the Blackwood firm to fund Vanessa’s brother’s medical debts. When she threatened to take the evidence straight to the FBI, they took her.”

“Took her? Where?”

Before my father could answer, the laptop screen flashed red.

ALARM TRIGGERED: NORTH PROPERTY PERIMETER.

Through the camera feed, we watched two black SUVs tear through our front gates, their high beams cutting through the morning fog. In the lead vehicle sat Adrian, leaning out the window, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated murderous rage.

“They’re tracking us,” the driver grunted, checking the rearview mirror. “We’ve got company, Mr. Hayes.”

My father calmly picked up the suppressed pistol from the door pocket, checked the magazine with a sharp, metallic click, and looked out the rear window at the pursuing vehicles.

“Let them follow us,” my father whispered, a dangerous glint in his eye. “We’re going to the old dry docks. It’s time to settle accounts.”
