Chapter 5 - The War of AttritionThe next three days were an absolute whirlwind of legal maneuvers and corporate chaos.

News of the frozen freight contracts hit Rinaldi Logistics like a nuclear bomb. Without the steady cash flow from Nexus Tech, Harlan was forced to halt payroll for several of his senior drivers, prompting a wildcat strike among his workforce.

Meanwhile, Maya had successfully served Tatum with a temporary restraining order. The sheriff's deputy delivered the papers right to the Oakbrook mansion while Tatum was hosting a luncheon for her socialite friends. The story of Tatum being served with an assault order spread through the suburban country club circuit like wildfire, completely shattering her image as a sweet, innocent heiress.

On Wednesday evening, I was sitting in Maya’s high-rise law office reviewing the initial draft of my divorce petition.

"He's asking for spousal support," Maya said, shaking her head as she flipped through a stack of papers sent over by Vance's court-appointed attorney. "Vance is claiming that because you froze his family's company accounts, he lost his income and is now financially dependent on you."

I let out a harsh laugh. "He's making $180,000 a year at his father's firm! Or at least he was."

"His father officially suspended his salary yesterday," Maya explained, sliding a document across the desk. "Harlan is trying to make Vance look broke on paper so he can bleed you for alimony during the divorce proceedings. It's a classic move."

"Let him try," I said, my jaw tightening. "I have records of every joint expense from the past two years. Vance hasn't paid a single mortgage payment on our condo since we moved in. He spent his entire paycheck on custom suits, sports cars, and funding Tatum’s weekend trips."

"We'll counter-file for full asset separation based on his financial dissipation," Maya agreed, marking the document with a red pen. "Also, the Cook County State's Attorney's office called me an hour ago. They're reviewing the extortion texts from Aunt Jolene's burner phone. They want to know if you're willing to testify."

"In a heartbeat," I replied without hesitation.

Before Maya could speak, her assistant knocked on the door and stepped inside.

"Maya, there's a Harlan Rinaldi downstairs in the lobby," the assistant reported. "He's demanding to speak with Sloan. Security is holding him at the front desk."

I exchanged a glance with Maya. Harlan had finally decided to step out from behind his wife's skirt and face me himself.

"Send him up," I told the assistant.

"Sloan, you don't have to meet him," Maya warned softly.

"No, I want to," I said, standing up and smoothing my skirt. "It's time Harlan realized that his intimidation tactics don't work in the real world."

Five minutes later, Harlan Rinaldi walked into the conference room.

The proud, arrogant patriarch who had sat at the head of the crab feast on Saturday looked ten years older. His gray hair was unkempt, his expensive suit was rumpled, and deep purple bags hung beneath his eyes. He didn't look like a powerful CEO anymore; he looked like a desperate man watching his kingdom burn.

He stopped at the opposite side of the long glass table, staring at me with a mixture of rage and exhaustion.

"Sloan," Harlan said, his voice gravelly. "This has gone far enough."

"Has it, Harlan?" I asked, leaning against the edge of the table with my arms crossed. "I thought we were just following family rules. Isn't that what you told Vance? That the elders get to decide everything?"

Harlan swallowed hard, his jaw clenching. "Loretta and Tatum were out of line. I admit that. Tatum has been spoiled her whole life, and Loretta... Loretta doesn't know when to stop. But you've destroyed my company's reputation, Sloan! My drivers are striking, my bank is threatening to call my loans, and my son is facing a career ruin!"

"You destroyed your own company, Harlan," I said coldly. "You used your business as leverage to force me into accepting abuse from your daughter and wife. You told Vance that if I didn't apologize, you'd take away his promotion and freeze his trust fund. You turned your family into a mafia operation."

"I was trying to protect my family!" Harlan yelled, slamming his fist onto the glass table.

"You were protecting a bully!" I shouted back, stepping forward. "Your daughter hit me with a metal fork! Your sister tried to blackmail my career! And your wife stood over me like a warden! You sat at the end of that table, drank your bourbon, and pretended it wasn't happening because you were too weak to control the monsters you created!"

Harlan flinched, stepping back as if I had struck him.

"What do you want, Sloan?" Harlan whispered, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "What will it take for you to unfreeze the freight contracts and drop the charges?"

I looked at him, feeling no pity, only a deep, cold clarity.

"First," I said, holding up a finger, "you will issue a public, written apology to me, signed by you, Loretta, and Tatum, acknowledging that Tatum assaulted me and that your family attempted to blackmail me."

Harlan’s face went pale. "A public apology? That will ruin our standing in Oakbrook!"

"Second," I continued, ignoring his complaint, "Vance will sign a full waiver of all claims to my property, my income, and my assets in the divorce settlement. He leaves with what he brought into the marriage: his clothes and his sports car."

"And third?" Harlan asked, his voice trembling.

"Third," I said, leaning closer, "Rinaldi Logistics will reimburse Nexus Tech the $1.2 million in overbilled freight charges immediately. Once the wire transfer clears, I will recommend that my board resume vendor relations on a probation basis."

Harlan stared at me, his eyes wide with shock. "That's... that's financial ruin for us this quarter!"

"Then you better start selling some of your wives' jewelry, Harlan," I said smoothly, picking up my handbag. "You have until 5 PM tomorrow to deliver the signed agreements. If you miss the deadline, the federal audit begins on Monday."

May you like

I walked past him toward the door, pausing just as my hand touched the handle.

"Oh, and Harlan?" I added, looking back over my shoulder. "Next time you invite a guest to dinner, make sure you don't underestimate them."
