Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the DynastyBy 4:30 PM on Thursday, three executed legal documents were delivered to Maya’s office by a high-priority courier.

Harlan had folded.
The public apology—a short, humiliating statement admitting that Tatum had committed an unprovoked physical assault and that the family had engaged in wrongful conduct—was posted to Loretta’s personal Facebook page and sent directly to the Rinaldi family's extended group chat.
The response within their social circle was immediate and catastrophic.
Aunt Marilyn and Aunt Jolene, terrified of being dragged into the Cook County State's Attorney's investigation, immediately scrubbed their own social media accounts and severed ties with Loretta. The socialites in Oakbrook who had spent years bowing to Loretta’s arrogant dominance were now gossiping endlessly about the "crab leg scandal."
Tatum’s social life collapsed overnight. Her country club membership was quietly suspended following the public filing of the restraining order, and her wealthy fiancé—a junior partner at a private equity firm—canceled their engagement after reading the police report.
Vance signed the divorce settlement without a single word of protest. Stripped of his family's protection and facing public humiliation, he surrendered all claims to my condo and my assets.
On Friday evening, six days after the catastrophic Sunday dinner, I sat on my balcony overlooking the Chicago river, holding a glass of chilled Pinot Grigio. The cool autumn wind rustled through my hair, carrying away the lingering stench of the Rinaldi family's dysfunction.
My phone chimed on the small glass table. It was a text from Vance.
Can we talk? Just ten minutes. Please, Sloan. I’m staying at a hotel near the airport.
I looked at the message for a long moment. Part of me—the part that had loved him five days ago—felt a faint twinge of sadness. But the rest of me knew that the man I had loved was an illusion, a weak shadow created by his parents' wealth.
I typed back a single sentence:
Everything we have to say has been said through our lawyers. Do not contact me again.
I blocked his number.
A few minutes later, Maya called me, her voice filled with quiet satisfaction.
"The $1.2 million wire transfer from Rinaldi Logistics just cleared our escrow account, Sloan," Maya reported. "Nexus Tech's legal team has officially closed the internal audit. You're completely in the clear."
"Thank you, Maya," I said, taking a sip of my wine. "For everything."
May you like
"You did the hard work, Sloan," Maya replied softly. "Most women would have shrunk away or suffered in silence. You stood your ground and burned their house down."
"They tried to teach me a lesson about their 'pecking order,'" I said, looking out at the glittering city lights. "I just made sure they learned mine."
