Chapter 8 - Down in the VaultThe subterranean safe room was dead silent, save for the low, rhythmic hum of the air filtration system and the faint, muffled concussions of explosions echoing from miles above.

Elena paced back and forth across the reinforced concrete floor, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist. Every fiber of her being screamed with tension. She could hear the muffled pop of gunfire through the ceiling vents, each sound a terrifying reminder of the violence raging just feet above her head.
Click. Whir.
The electronic keypad beside the heavy steel vault door suddenly flashed red.
Elena stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat.
Someone was attempting to override the lock from the outside terminal in the private study above.
Bypass code accepted.
The heavy steel locking bolts began to retract with a loud, mechanical clanking sound that echoed like thunder in the confined space.
Panic surged through Elena’s veins. She backed away toward the far corner of the vault, her eyes darting around the room for a weapon. Her hand brushed against a heavy steel fire extinguisher mounted beside the emergency exit hatch. She grabbed it, hoisting the heavy canister with both hands, bracing herself as the steel door slowly swung inward.
Through the opening haze of gray smoke, a tall figure stepped into the vault.
Dark tactical gear. A black balaclava concealing the face, save for cold, calculating eyes.
It wasn't Dominic.
The intruder raised a suppressed automatic pistol, aiming it directly at Elena’s chest.
“Well, well,” a familiar, venomous voice sneered from behind the mask as the man lowered the balaclava just enough to reveal a cruel, scarred smirk. “Look at the little runaway bird, hiding in the dark.”
Terry Cole.
Vincent Caldwell’s primary enforcer—the very man who had dragged her into that warehouse and chained her to the concrete pillar.
Elena’s entire body went cold, the trauma of the past week rushing back in a tidal wave of terror. But beneath the fear, a hot, blinding rage ignited in her chest.
“You’re dead,” Elena whispered, her voice shaking with fury as she gripped the fire extinguisher tighter.
Cole chuckled, taking a slow step forward into the vault, his pistol steady. “Am I? Ashford is upstairs bleeding out on his own grand staircase. And once I put a bullet in your head and take the decryption drive, I’m walking out of here a very rich man.”
He raised the barrel higher.
Elena didn't hesitate. With a primal scream of pure rage, she hurled the heavy steel fire extinguisher straight at his face with every ounce of strength she had left.
Cole ducked instinctively, but the heavy metal canister clipped his shoulder, sending him staggering sideways against the vault door.
Before he could recover his balance, a heavy shadow exploded through the doorway behind him.
Dominic Ashford hit Terry Cole like a freight train.
The impact slammed Cole’s head hard against the steel doorframe, sending his pistol clattering across the concrete floor. Dominic didn't give him a second to breathe. He grabbed Cole by the collar of his tactical vest, slamming his fist into the enforcer’s jaw with bone-crushing force once, twice, three times until Cole went completely limp, sliding down the steel wall into an unmoving heap.
Dominic stood over him, breathing heavily, his knuckles bruised and bleeding, his dark eyes blazing with an unholy fury.
He slowly turned around, his gaze locking onto Elena where she stood trembling against the back wall, still gripping the empty air.
Dominic crossed the vault in two long strides, dropping his weapon and pulling Elena straight into his arms, crushing her against his chest as if trying to shield her from the entire world.
“Are you hurt?” Dominic demanded, his voice frantic, his hands gripping her shoulders to check for injuries. “Did he touch you?”
Elena buried her face in his shoulder, letting out a long, ragged sob as the terrifying adrenaline finally broke.
May you like
“No,” she choked out, her arms wrapping tightly around his waist. “No... you came back.”
“I told you,” Dominic murmured into her hair, his voice fierce and absolute as the distant sirens of federal law enforcement finally wailed through the gates above. “Nobody touches what’s mine.”
