Chapter 10 - The Last Button (1,800 words)The late-night air was crisp and cool as Julian and Iris walked hand-in-hand through the quiet courtyard of their estate overlooking the bay.

The gala had ended hours ago, but neither of them felt tired. The moonlight reflected off the dark water, casting a silver glow over the stone paths and manicured gardens.

Iris wore Julian's heavy suit jacket over her velvet gown to ward off the chill, just as she had on the night her world had changed forever at the Beacon Grand.

"You were extraordinary tonight, Iris," Julian said softly, pulling her close as they stopped near the edge of the terrace railing.

"I had a very good teacher," Iris teased gently, resting her head against his chest. "A man who taught me that when someone touches what is mine, the rules cease to exist."

Julian chuckled, a rich, warm sound that vibrated against her cheek. "I meant every word of that. And I always will."

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box.

Iris looked up, her eyebrows arching with curiosity. "Julian, you already gave me a medal tonight. And a foundation. And half your corporate shares."

"This isn't from the foundation," Julian said, opening the box.

Inside, resting on black velvet, was a single, perfectly crafted button made of solid white mother-of-pearl, encased in a delicate band of platinum and suspended on a fine gold chain.

Iris gasped softly, her fingers reaching out to touch the smooth, iridescent surface. "Is this...?"

"It’s the first button that hit the floor that night," Julian revealed quietly. "I had the hotel security team sweep the ballroom floor after we left. I kept it."

Tears pricked the corners of Iris's eyes as she looked at the tiny, beautiful object.

"Why did you keep it?" she whispered.

"Because that button was the moment the world stopped looking past you," Julian explained, his voice filled with deep, overwhelming emotion. "It was the moment you stood in front of six hundred powerful people, stripped of your anonymity, holding yourself together with nothing but your pride—and showed every single one of them what real strength looks like."

He took the necklace out of the box, unclasping it and gently wrapping it around her neck, letting the pearl button rest just above her heart beside the river stone.

"You spent years protecting everyone else, Iris," Julian murmured, turning her around to face him, his hands cradling her cheeks. "Now, let the world protect you."

Iris looked up into the dark, loving eyes of her husband of nine years. The fear of being exposed, the pain of public humiliation, the long nights of secret burdens—all of it had melted away, leaving behind a deep, unshakable foundation of love, purpose, and total freedom.

"I love you, Julian," she said softly.

"I love you, my Chairwoman," Julian replied with a warm smile, bending down to press his lips to hers.

High above them, the stars shone brightly over the city, casting their clear, unbroken light across the buildings, the clinics, the warehouses, and the homes of thousands of people whose lives had been touched by a quiet woman in a torn blouse.

The secret was over. The fight was won. And for Iris Vane, the story was just beginning.
