Chapter 4 - The Unmasking (1,800 words)At nine o'clock the following morning, the glass-and-steel skyscraper of the Lantern Trust headquarters was buzzing with frantic energy.

Word of an unannounced, mandatory board meeting had been issued at midnight. The board members—a prestigious panel of former senators, medical pioneers, and high-level philanthropists—sat around the massive mahogany table on the top floor.
Miles Corrigan sat in a waiting room outside the glass board doors, sweating through his custom suit. Next to him sat Bianca Vale. She was no longer wearing silver satin and diamonds; she wore a modest, high-necked black dress, her hair pulled back into a tight bun, looking pale and completely stripped of her usual grandeur. In her trembling hands, she held a thick white envelope containing a written apology and a personal check for fifty thousand dollars made out to the foundation.
"Just stay quiet and do whatever I tell you," Miles whispered harshly. "If she demands you apologize on camera, you do it."
Bianca swallowed hard, nodding mutely.
The double doors of the boardroom clicked open.
Julian Vane stepped out, looking immaculate in a charcoal three-piece suit. Beside him walked Iris. She wore a tailored ivory pantsuit that exuded power, understated elegance, and absolute authority. Her hair was swept up, exposing her clean jawline and dark, penetrating eyes. She looked nothing like the soft-spoken volunteer from the night before.
Miles instantly stood up, bowing slightly. "Mrs. Vane. Mr. Vane. Thank you for granting us five minutes of your time."
Iris stopped, looking at the two of them with quiet detachment. "You have three minutes, Mr. Corrigan. The board meeting is about to commence."
Miles nudged Bianca hard in the ribs.
Bianca took a step forward, her knees shaking. She bowed her head, holding out the envelope with both hands. "Mrs. Vane... I am here to offer my deepest, most sincere apologies for my unspeakable behavior last night. I was... I was stressed, I was out of line, and I acted like a monster. I have written a full confession and apology, and I've enclosed a donation to the children's wing."
Iris didn't reach for the envelope. She simply looked at Bianca's outstretched hands.
"Fifty thousand dollars, Miss Vale?" Iris asked softly.
"Yes, ma'am," Bianca said quickly, thinking she saw a crack in the ice. "And I am prepared to double it! Anything to make amends for the hurt I caused you."
"You didn't hurt me," Iris said plainly.
Bianca blinked, looking up in confusion.
"You embarrassed yourself," Iris continued, her voice cool and steady. "You exposed your own lack of character to six hundred people. A check cannot buy back your dignity, Miss Vale, nor can it wipe away the reality of how you treat people when you think nobody of importance is watching."
"Mrs. Vane, please," Miles interjected desperately. "We know we made a catastrophic error. But Corrigan Systems employs over four hundred people in this city. If you pull our data integration contract, we will be forced to lay off half our workforce by next month! Don't punish innocent employees for our personal failings!"
Julian stepped forward, his presence towering over Miles. "Do not hide your incompetence behind your employees, Corrigan. You used those four hundred workers as a shield while you built a toxic corporate culture. You knew Miss Vale treated staff like dirt—my investigators spent the night looking into your company's internal reports. You have six pending HR complaints regarding workplace harassment that you personally swept under the rug."
Miles went deathly white. "How... how did you get those files?"
"I own the server farm where your cloud backups are stored," Julian replied with a cold, terrifying smile. "Did you really think your encryption could keep Vane Global out?"
Iris gestured toward the boardroom. "The board has already made its decision, Mr. Corrigan. Corrigan Systems will not receive the Lantern Trust contract. However, because I do care about those four hundred employees, the Lantern Trust will be launching an open acquisition bid for your company's software assets."
Miles gasped. "An acquisition? You want to buy us out?"
"We will purchase the software division at fair market value," Iris explained smoothly. "Every single line-level employee will retain their job, their health benefits, and receive a fifteen percent raise under our management. You, however, will resign as CEO immediately, surrender your voting shares, and exit the medical industry permanently."
Miles felt the floor dropping out from beneath him. It was a complete execution—neat, legal, and utterly inescapable. If he refused, Vane Global would crush his company through market pressure within a month, leaving him with nothing. If he accepted, his career was over, but his employees would survive, and he would walk away with just enough capital to avoid prison.
"You... you thought of all that this morning?" Miles stammered, looking at Iris as if seeing a grandmaster grandmaster chess player for the first time.
"I thought of it while I was changing out of my torn clothes last night," Iris replied softly. "Power isn't about crushing people, Mr. Corrigan. It's about protecting those who can't protect themselves. You never learned that lesson. Now, you will."

She turned her back on them and walked into the boardroom. Julian lingered for a second, casting one final, dismissive glance at Bianca, who was standing frozen, holding her useless check in the empty hallway.
"Have a pleasant day, Miss Vale," Julian said softly, before closing the heavy mahogany doors behind him.
