Chapter 8 - The Shadow of RetaliationTwo weeks after the purge, the Larkmore Grand was running smoother than it had in decades. Morale among the staff had skyrocketed. Servers smiled, tips were paid on time, and the toxic cloud left by Merrick and Clara had evaporated.

Thea sat in her office, reviewing architectural blueprints for the hotel’s upcoming community outreach scholarship program—a project Rowena had funded specifically to help working-class students pay for vocational and nursing school tuition.

The intercom on her desk buzzed sharply.

“Thea,” Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker, sounding uncharacteristically tense. “You need to come down to the lobby security desk right now.”

Thea frowned, standing up immediately. “What’s happening?”

“It’s Clara Varden. And she brought company.”

Within two minutes, Thea stepped out of the private elevator into the grand marble lobby. A small crowd of hotel guests and staff had gathered near the front entrance, whispering nervously.

Standing in the center of the lobby was Clara, flanked by two aggressive-looking men in sharp gray suits carrying leather briefcases, alongside a local television news reporter holding a live microphone.

“Ah, here she is!” Clara shrieked, pointing a manicured finger directly at Thea as she stepped out of the elevator. “The little gold-digging commoner who manipulated a senile old woman into destroying my family!”

The TV reporter instantly spun around, thrusting the microphone toward Thea. “Miss Tierney! Local media has received reports that you used undue influence over Larkmore matriarch Rowena Varden to secure an executive position and financial kickbacks following a staged incident at a wedding. How do you respond to allegations of extortion?”

The flashes of cameras blinded Thea for a fraction of a second. A familiar surge of hot anger rose in her chest, but she forced herself to breathe, remembering the lessons of the past two weeks. She didn't flinch. She didn't run.

Before Thea could open her mouth to speak, the private elevator behind her chimed once more.

The heavy oak doors slid open.

Rowena Varden rolled out into the lobby, her wheelchair moving with smooth, deliberate precision. Marcus Vance and two corporate attorneys flanked her sides, carrying thick manila folders stamped with federal seals.

The lobby fell into an immediate, breathless silence.

Rowena rolled right past the news reporter, stopping inches away from Clara Varden. Her eyes were colder than glacier ice.

“Extortion, Clara?” Rowena asked, her voice carrying easily across the cavernous lobby. “How fascinating that you use that word, considering federal investigators just executed a search warrant on your off-shore accounts containing the four hundred thousand dollars embezzled from our staff tip pools.”

Clara’s face instantly lost all color. Her jaw dropped, and the microphone in the reporter’s hand wavered.

“That’s... that’s a lie!” Clara stammered, stepping back. “You can’t—you have no proof!”

Marcus calmly opened one of the manila folders, holding up signed bank transfers bearing Clara’s personal signature and corporate seal.

“Signed, sealed, and delivered, Mrs. Varden,” Marcus said smoothly, looking directly at the television camera. “Federal marshals are currently processing warrants for grand larceny and corporate fraud.”

Rowena looked up at the reporter, her gaze sharp and unyielding. “Broadcast that, young man. And as for my company, my executive staff, and Miss Tierney—anyone who attempts to slander or harass the people who actually keep this hotel running will face the full weight of the Varden legal empire.”

Clara turned around and bolted toward the glass doors, desperately trying to escape before the police arrived, only to find two uniformed officers blocking her exit with handcuffs ready.
