Chapter 5 - The Press Conference Gambit

Evan Whitmore was not a man who surrendered quietly. Like all men born into immense, unearned privilege, he believed that reality could be bent if he simply threw a loud enough tantrum in front of a camera.

At seven o'clock the following morning, Evan appeared on *Good Morning New York*, sitting beside Kelsey, who was visibly trembling and clutching a handkerchief.

"My ex-wife is conducting a vicious, personal vendetta against my family," Evan declared to the cameras, his expression carefully rehearsed into one of wounded nobility. "Clara exploited a legal loophole in my grandfather’s outdated trust to hijack Whitmore Freight. She has locked me out of my life’s work, frozen our family assets, and left my pregnant fiancée without access to basic healthcare or housing. She is heartless, vindictive, and mentally unstable."

Kelsey dabbed at an invisible tear. "I just want what's best for our unborn child. To be thrown into the street like this... it's cruelty beyond imagination."

I watched the broadcast on the wall-mounted television in the Whitmore Freight executive boardroom, where twenty journalists from Bloomberg, Forbes, and the Wall Street Journal were already seated for my scheduled press conference.

Naomi Vance walked up to the podium, tapping the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen of the press, thank you for coming. Ms. Clara Whitmore, Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of Whitmore Freight, will now take questions."

I stepped up to the microphones. I didn't wear jewelry. I didn't cry.

"Thirty minutes ago, Mr. Evan Whitmore went on live television to accuse this administration of cruelty," I began, my voice carrying cleanly across the silent room. "He claimed that his removal was personal, and that his pregnant partner has been deprived of their rightful home. Let me clarify the facts with documented evidence."

With a click of a remote, the projector behind me illuminated a massive split-screen.

On the left were the official lease agreements of the Tribeca penthouse, proving it was paid for entirely with corporate freight revenues meant for dockworkers' pension funds. On the right were the obstetrician bills for Kelsey Adams—dating back nine months prior to the divorce filing—billed directly to the company's healthcare reserve fund.

"Furthermore," I continued, clicking to the next slide, "our internal audit completed this morning reveals an ongoing criminal conspiracy. Over the past three years, Evan Whitmore and his mother, Barbara Whitmore, illegally siphoned nearly three million dollars from this corporation to shell companies in the Caribbean."

The room erupted into frantic camera flashes and shouted questions.

"Ms. Whitmore! Are you pressing criminal charges?" a reporter from Reuters yelled.

"The evidence has already been delivered to the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York," I replied steadily. "Whitmore Freight is a company built on the backs of two thousand hardworking logistics workers, truckers, and warehouse staff. It will no longer serve as the personal piggy bank for a corrupt playboy and his enablers."

I turned away from the podium as the room dissolved into absolute media frenzy.

On the screen behind me, Evan’s live morning interview was abruptly cut off by the network to switch to breaking news coverage of my press conference. Evan’s horrified face was broadcast to eight million viewers, watching his empire vanish in real time.
