Chapter 6 - Eviction Morning

By noon, the summer heat was baking the cobblestone streets of Tribeca. Outside the luxury pre-war building, two massive industrial moving vans were parked, hazard lights blinking.

Up on the penthouse floor, the scene was pure chaos.

"You can't touch that! That painting was a gift from an ambassador!" Barbara shrieked, batting frantically at the hands of two burly movers who were wrapping a large canvas in protective bubble wrap.

"Every asset purchased with corporate accounts belongs to Whitmore Freight, Mrs. Whitmore," the court-appointed receiver said dryly, checking an itemized inventory on an iPad. "Unless you can produce a personal bank receipt showing independent funds, it goes into corporate storage."

Kelsey sat on a packed trunk in the hallway, crying hysterically into her phone. "Mom! The cards aren't working! Evan promised we’d have a house in the Hamptons, and now they won't even let me take my shoes! They’re inventorying my designer shoes!"

Evan stood in the middle of the stripped living room, looking around at the bare walls and exposed floorboards. His suit was wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot from a sleepless night of frantic calls to lawyers who refused to represent him without upfront retainers.

"Where is she?" Evan muttered, his fists clenching until his knuckles turned white. "Where is Clara?"

"Right here, Evan."

The private elevator doors opened, and I walked into the foyer, flanked by two building security guards.

Evan lunged toward me, but the guards immediately blocked his path, their heavy hands pressing into his chest. "You sick, calculating bitch! You planned this! You’ve been planning this for months!"

"I didn't plan your adultery, Evan," I said softly, looking at him with pity rather than hatred. "I didn't plan your mother’s theft. I didn't force you to sign fraudulent checks or treat our marriage like a joke. You built this trap with your own arrogance. I merely waited for you to walk into it."

Kelsey scrambled up from the trunk, her face blotched with mascara tears. She held up the heavy diamond ring I had given her yesterday.

"Take it back!" she wailed, throwing the ring at my feet. It bounced off the hardwood with a hollow click. "Take the damn ring! Just tell them to let us stay! I'm pregnant, Clara! Have some mercy!"

I looked down at the glittering diamond that once represented my hopes for a family, then looked up at Kelsey.

"You didn't care about mercy when you texted me sonogram pictures from my husband's bed," I said, my voice cutting through her tears like a scalpel. "You wanted my life, Kelsey. You wanted his name, his money, and his status. Congratulations. You have him all to yourself now."

"We're broke, you idiot!" Kelsey screamed, turning suddenly on Evan and shoving him with both hands. "He has nothing! His mother has nothing! You dragged me into a federal criminal case!"

Evan stumbled backward, looking at Kelsey with shock. "Kelsey, shut up! We stick together!"

"Stick together with what? You can't even afford an Uber to New Jersey!"

I signaled to the movers. "Finish clearing the premises. Change the locks at precisely one o'clock."

As I stepped back into the elevator, the last thing I heard before the brass doors closed was the sound of Barbara and Kelsey screaming at each other, while Evan sank to his knees on the bare, dusty floor of the home he had stolen from me.
