Chapter 5 - The Glass House FallsThe mahogany desk in Dante Moretti’s private office had been built to intimidate. Massive, heavy, and carved from imported Indonesian timber, it dominated the penthouse suite overlooking the financial district.

At 8:15 AM, the double doors of the office burst open.

Dante didn't look up from his laptop. He had spent the last two hours screaming at his attorneys, calling three different judges who had suddenly gone to voicemail, and trying to access his primary wealth management portal—only to find his login credentials locked out with a federal seizure notice.

“I told you not to come here, Natalia,” Dante snapped without raising his eyes. “Did you check the safe? Is the backup drive there or did Isabella take it?”

“It’s not Natalia, Mr. Moretti.”

Dante’s head snapped up.

Standing in the center of his office was not his terrified mistress, but Marcus Vance—the senior partner at Vance & Sterling, the most ruthless corporate litigation firm in the state. Behind him stood two federal marshals in dark tactical vests, their badges gleaming beneath the recessed ceiling lights.

Dante stood up slowly, his tall frame tensing.

“What is the meaning of this?” Dante’s voice was smooth, deadly, and dripping with the casual authority of a man who owned half the city council. “You’re trespassing. I want you out of this building before I have my security detail throw you into the street.”

Marcus Vance did not flinch. He walked slowly toward the mahogany desk, placed a thick leather binder squarely in the center of the blotter, and flipped it open to the first page.

“You don't have a security detail anymore, Dante,” Marcus said mildly. “The state police executed a receivership warrant on Moretti Security Services forty-five minutes ago. Your assets are frozen. Your offices are sealed. And you are officially being served with notice of a multi-jurisdictional grand jury indictment.”

Dante stared at the first page of the binder.

There was his signature. Right there at the bottom of a shell company transfer order moving four million dollars of foundation money into a private Bahamian account registered under Natalia Duca’s maiden name.

His signature. Clear. Undeniable. Executed three months ago.

“This is forged,” Dante snarled, lunging across the desk.

The two federal marshals moved with terrifying speed, pinning his arms behind his back and slamming him down against the polished mahogany surface before he could touch the lawyer.

“Forgery is hard to prove when the forensic accountant who logged the wire is sitting in the next room with your wife’s legal team,” Marcus said, buttoning his suit jacket and looking down at Dante with cold pity.

“Isabella...” Dante hissed through his teeth, his face pressed against the wood. “Where is she?”

Marcus paused at the double doors, turning back with a slight smile.

“Mrs. Moretti is currently resting at a private location, preparing for the birth of her daughter,” Marcus said smoothly. “She asked me to give you a message, Dante.”

Dante strained against the marshals, his dark eyes blazing with murderous fury. “What message?”

“She said: The books are balanced.”

The heavy oak doors clicked shut.

Left alone with the federal marshals in the wreckage of his empire, Dante Moretti finally understood what real power looked like. It wasn't about whiskey glasses, expensive galas, or holding another woman’s waist in a crowded room.

It was about the quiet, devastating precision of a woman who didn't need to scream to destroy you.
