Chapter 7 - The Reckoning in CourtThe federal courthouse in downtown was surrounded by reporters, camera crews, and curious onlookers when Isabella arrived three weeks later.

She wore a simple, elegant cream-colored maternity coat, her dark hair pinned back neatly from her face. She walked with a slow, deliberate grace, flanked by two private security guards and Marcus Vance on her left.

As the flashbulbs exploded around her, she did not look down. She did not hide her face.

She looked straight ahead, her head held high, embodying the quiet, untouchable dignity of a woman who had reclaimed her own name.

Inside Courtroom 3B, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Dante Moretti sat at the defense table. He looked different than he had at the gala. His bespoke suit was rumpled, his jaw was dark with stubble, and his arrogant posture had collapsed into a bitter, defeated slump.

When the oak doors opened and Isabella walked down the center aisle, Dante turned his head.

His dark eyes locked onto hers.

For a second, there was a flash of the old Dante—the man who had promised her the world eight years ago before a crowd of three hundred people. But there was no love in his gaze now. Only a cold, burning hatred born of absolute humiliation.

Isabella did not flinch. She took her seat in the front row of the gallery, resting her hands calmly over her swollen belly.

Judge Sarah Sterling—a federal magistrate known for her zero-tolerance policy on white-collar corruption—entered the room.

“All rise,” the bailiff called out.

The courtroom settled.

“We are here for the bail review and formal arraignment in United States versus Dante Moretti,” Judge Sterling announced, adjusting her glasses. “Mr. Moretti, how do you plead to the charges of federal wire fraud, conspiracy, and systematic embezzlement?”

Dante’s defense attorney stood up, clearing his throat. “Not guilty, Your Honor, and we move for immediate release on bond given that—”

“Motion denied,” Judge Sterling interrupted flatly.

A murmur rippled through the gallery. Dante’s attorney blinked in shock.

“Your Honor, my client has deep roots in this community—”

“Your client has spent the last seven years converting a public charity into a private slush fund while systematically concealing assets from his spouse and federal regulators,” Judge Sterling said, her voice ringing with absolute authority. “Given the nature of the flight risk, the scale of the financial concealment, and the newly submitted whistleblower affidavits provided by Mrs. Moretti’s legal team, Mr. Moretti will remain remanded to federal custody without bond pending trial.”

She struck her gavel.

Clack.

Dante gripped the edge of the defense table so hard his knuckles turned white. He turned around in his chair, looking directly at Isabella as the marshals stepped forward to lead him away.

“Isabella!” he shouted, his voice cracking with desperate rage. “You’ll ruin everything! You’re destroying our family!”

Isabella did not blink. She looked at him with serene, absolute detachment.

“We never had a family, Dante,” she said softly, her voice carrying across the silent courtroom. “We had an arrangement. And my audit is finished.”

The marshals pulled him away, guiding him through the side door toward the holding cells.

As the heavy metal door clicked shut behind him, Isabella stood up, placed her hand gently on her stomach, and walked out into the warm autumn sunlight.
