Chapter 10 - The Real Queen

The Grand Municipal Ballroom was a sea of black ties, diamond necklaces, and hushed, gossiping voices.
Three months had passed since the downfall of the Bennett family, and high society was still reeling from the shockwaves. Richard Bennett had been sentenced to forty years without parole; Vanessa Bennett was locked in a psychiatric federal wing awaiting trial for attempted murder. The Bennett empire was completely dismantled, its assets liquidated.
And standing in the center of the underworld and legal throne was Dante Moretti.
Whispers buzzed through the crowd as the double mahogany doors at the top of the grand marble staircase swung open.
The master of ceremonies cleared his throat, his voice echoing across the silent ballroom:
“Presenting Mr. Dante Moretti, and his fiancée, Miss Elena Carter.”
A collective gasp rippled through the room.
Dante stepped into the light at the top of the stairs, looking striking and imperious in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo. But no one was looking at him.
Every eye in the room was fixed on the woman on his arm.
Elena descended the marble stairs with the grace of royalty. She wore a breathtaking, custom-tailored emerald silk gown that cascaded to the floor, perfectly accentuating her delicate curves. Around her neck was a delicate diamond collar, but outshining every jewel in the room was the sapphire blazing on her left ring finger.
Her head was held high, her dark eyes clear and confident. There was no trace of the quiet maid who had lowered her gaze to avoid cruel laughter. She was stunning, regal, and undeniably powerful.
As they reached the bottom of the staircase, the crowd parted instantly, forming a wide path of reverence.
Among the guests stood several socialites who had laughed with Vanessa on the night Elena cried. Their faces were pale, their expressions filled with nervous terror as Elena’s gaze swept over them.
Elena stopped before them. She didn't glare. She didn't demand an apology. She simply offered a faint, graceful, untouchable smile—the smile of a woman who had won everything without ever losing her humanity.
The socialites instinctively bowed their heads in shame.
A waiter passed by, carrying a tray of vintage champagne flutes. Dante gently stopped him, taking two glasses from the silver tray. He handed one to Elena, his fingers brushing hers openly, proudly, in front of the entire eastern seaboard’s elite.
Dante raised his glass, his deep, commanding voice carrying effortlessly over the hundreds of guests.
“A toast,” Dante announced, his eyes never leaving Elena’s face. “To the woman who showed me that true power isn't measured by fear, but by love. To my future wife. The only queen this city will ever answer to.”
A thunderous applause broke out across the ballroom, led by city officials, business magnates, and Dante’s most hardened capos alike.
Elena clinked her glass against his, her heart overflowing with peace.
Dante set his glass down on a passing tray, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her into the center of the dance floor as the orchestra began to play a sweeping waltz.
He drew her close, his hand resting warm against her lower back, his hazel eyes consuming her entirely.
“Are you happy, my queen?” Dante whispered against her ear as they began to move across the floor in perfect harmony.
Elena looked up at the man who had torn down an empire to protect her tears, who had saved her mother, and who had given her a life beyond her wildest dreams. She rested her cheek against his chest, right over his beating heart.

“I’m finally home,” Elena answered.
And beneath the golden chandeliers, Dante Moretti held his wife-to-be tight against his chest, knowing that in a world of blood and shadow, he had found the only treasure that truly mattered.
