Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

From the shadows behind the Bennett guards, two figures emerged silently.

Marco, Dante’s second-in-command, and another tall enforcer stood with suppressed semi-automatics leveled directly at the back of the Bennett bodyguards' necks. The cold metallic click of safeties disengaging echoed like a death knell in the tiled kitchen.

The two guards froze instantly, their hands hovering uselessly above their waistbands.

“Stand down,” Richard hissed through gritted teeth, realizing the suicidal math of the room. He glared past Dante’s shoulder at Elena. “You’re throwing away a two-hundred-million-dollar maritime partnership for a thieving little maid? Do you have any idea who she is, Dante? She was fired from St. Jude for stealing narcotics funds! She’s a criminal!”

Vanessa stepped forward, her voice trembling with venomous glee. “It’s true, Dante! Ask her! She’s a fraud! She manipulated her way into your staff just like she tried to embezzle from our research trials!”

Elena felt the blood rush to her face, that old, sickening humiliation threatening to claw its way up her throat. But before she could speak, Dante moved.

He didn't draw a weapon. He simply walked toward Vanessa.

He moved with the predatory grace of an apex hunter, every line of his six-foot-three frame radiating lethal authority. Vanessa’s triumphant smile withered instantly; she took a panicked step backward until her heels hit the edge of the prep island.

Dante stopped inches from her. He reached down and snatched the manila folder from the counter where Elena had left it, tossing it contemptuously against Vanessa’s chest. The papers spilled across the floor, white sheets fluttering like wounded birds onto the polished tiles.

“Page four,” Dante said smoothly. “The offshore wire transfer originating from your personal account in the Cayman Islands to dummy account 904. Authorized by your biometric key.”

Vanessa looked down at the scattered papers, her face draining of all color. “This... this is proprietary company data. Where did you get this?”

“Page seven,” Dante continued, his voice devoid of mercy. “The internal memo instructing the laboratory technicians to adulterate Batch 44 of the immunosuppressant trial. The batch that caused severe renal failure in twelve patients—including Elena Carter’s mother.”

Elena gasped, the breath violently ripped from her lungs. “What?”

She lunged forward, ignoring the guards, dropping to her knees on the cold tile and grabbing the sheet Dante had mentioned. Her eyes devoured the black text.

*Batch 44: High-impurity byproduct retained to reduce synthesis cost. Target patients: subsidized welfare recipients.*

“You didn't just frame me,” Elena whispered, looking up at Vanessa with wide, horrified eyes. “You poisoned those people to cut manufacturing costs. My mother didn't get sick from natural complications... you poisoned her.”

Vanessa’s lips twitched. The high-society mask slipped completely, revealing the rotten, sociopathic core beneath. “Those welfare cases were costing our research division millions,” Vanessa spat, her voice shrill with desperation. “They were dying anyway! Who cares about some useless old woman in a county bed?”

*Smack.*

The sound was sharp and deafening.

It wasn't Dante who struck her. It was Elena.

Elena stood over Vanessa, her chest heaving, her palm stinging from the impact that had sent the heiress sprawling against the prep counter. Vanessa clutched her red cheek in utter shock, her manicured fingers trembling.

“Don't you ever speak about my mother again,” Elena whispered, her voice deadly steady.

Richard Bennett lunged forward with a roar. “You bitch—!”

He didn't make it two inches. Dante intercepted him, his large hand clamping around Richard’s throat like a hydraulic press. With terrifying, effortless strength, Dante slammed the older man back against the wall, lifting him until Bennett’s designer loafers dangled three inches off the floor.

“Dante—let him go!” Vanessa shrieked.

Richard choked, his face turning dark purple as his hands clawed desperately at Dante’s iron forearm. Dante didn't blink. His expression remained terrifyingly impassive, like a man casually deciding whether to squash an insect.

“You came into my house,” Dante said, his voice a low, rumbling whisper that made the walls vibrate. “You insulted the only woman in this world who has ever looked at me without wanting something from my empire. You poisoned her blood, and you dared to demand her dignity on my floor.”

“Dante,” Elena’s voice was soft, breaking through the red haze in the room.

Dante didn't release his grip, but his eyes flicked toward her.

“Don't kill him here,” Elena said quietly. “Not like this. That’s too easy for them. Let them watch everything they stole be ripped away.”

For a long moment, Dante held Richard suspended by his windpipe. Then, with a cold smirk, he released him. Richard collapsed to the floor in a heap, coughing violently and clutching his bruised throat.

“Marco,” Dante commanded without looking at his lieutenant.

“Boss?”

“Escort Mr. Bennett and his daughter off the estate. Strip their security passes. Cancel the dock leases. And send the decrypted files to Special Agent Vance at the Federal Bureau.” Dante paused, his eyes settling on Vanessa’s trembling form. “Give them forty-eight hours to pack their bags before the raid. I want them to feel the walls closing in.”
