Chapter 4 - The Sound of Glass BreakingRoman Calder stood motionless in the shadow of the brick loading bay outside Warehouse 42, his broad chest rising and falling in slow, controlled surges. Behind him, three of his most lethal enforcers stood like marble statues, their hands resting near their holstered weapons.

Every word Evelyn had spoken inside that damp, freezing room had echoed through the rusted ventilation shaft above the door.

“By tomorrow morning, everyone will believe you did.”

Roman’s jaw muscles ticked. The woman he had proposed to—the woman he had allowed into his home because her aristocratic family connections provided a convenient shield for his legitimate business ventures—was a sadistic monster who preyed on children and tortured innocent women.

He didn't need to hear anything else.

With a single, chilling motion of his hand, Roman signaled his men.

Crash.

The reinforced steel door didn't just open; it exploded inward, ripped completely off its heavy industrial hinges by a hydraulic breaching tool. The sudden, deafening noise echoed off the concrete walls like a thunderclap.

Evelyn spun around, her face instantly draining of all color, her manicured hands flying to her mouth. The red wool coat seemed to swallow her as she staggered backward, tripping over a wooden pallet.

“Roman!” she gasped, her voice pitching up into a frantic, hysterical shriek. “R-Roman, darling! Thank God! You found us! This... this wretched girl, she tried to rob the estate, she kidnapped her brother, and I tracked her down here to rescue the money, but she attacked—”

She stopped dead.

Roman didn't look at the forged papers clutched in her trembling hands. He didn't look at the cash scattered on the floor. His eyes were fixed entirely on Nora, slumped unconscious against a wooden crate, her wrists bleeding and her face bruised.

Slowly, terrifyingly, Roman walked past Evelyn as if she didn't exist. He knelt beside Nora, his large, calloused hands gently testing the pulse at her throat. When he felt the weak, steady beat, the suffocating terror gripping his chest shifted into a cold, murderous fury.

He pulled a small pocketknife from his trousers and sliced through the thick hemp ropes binding her wrists, lifting her light, fragile body effortlessly into his arms.

“Get a medic to the primary safe house immediately,” Roman ordered without turning around. His voice was so cold it made his own enforcers shiver.

As his head enforcer, Viktor, stepped forward to secure the perimeter, Evelyn scrambled to her feet, her composure completely shattered. She rushed toward Roman, her hands reaching out to grab his sleeve.

“Roman, please! You don't understand! She’s lying! She’s a criminal, she’s a—!”

Roman stopped. He turned his head slowly, fixing Evelyn with a gaze so filled with malice that she froze mid-sentence, her breath catching in her throat.

“If she dies,” Roman whispered, his voice dangerously soft, “I won’t just kill your father, your brothers, and every lawyer your family employs. I will take everything your name stands for, burn it to ash in the harbor, and leave you with nothing.”

Evelyn let out a choked sob, collapsing against the concrete floor as Roman carried Nora out into the night air, placing her gently in the back of his waiting limousine.

The trap Evelyn had set had not caught Nora Hayes. It had only sprung open the gates of hell.
