Chapter 5 - The AwakeningThe sterile scent of antiseptic and white linen was the first thing Nora registered when consciousness slowly drifted back to her.

Her whole body ached as if she had been run over by a freight train, and her left wrist burned where the rope had friction-burned the skin. She tried to move her hand, but a heavy, comforting warmth held her fingers in place.

Nora blinked against the bright morning sunlight streaming through high-arched windows. She wasn't in the damp, freezing warehouse. She was in a vast, beautifully appointed bedroom overlooking the harbor, wrapped in heavy silk sheets.

Sitting in a leather armchair beside the bed, his dark coat discarded and his sleeves rolled up, was Roman Calder.

He looked exhausted. Dark circles shadowed his slate-grey eyes, and stubble darkened his jawline. He had obviously not slept a wink. The moment he saw her eyelids flutter, he leaned forward, setting aside a small cup of water with a straw.

“Don’t try to sit up too fast,” Roman said, his voice unusually gentle, stripped of its usual razor-sharp edge. He held the straw to her lips, and Nora drank eagerly, the cool water soothing her raw throat.

“Caleb...” Nora rasped, her eyes widening in sudden panic as memory flooded back. “Where is Caleb? Is he safe? Evelyn—she had men at the school—”

“Hush,” Roman interrupted, gently pressing a hand to her shoulder to keep her back against the pillows. “Caleb is safe. Marco and my men got to the school twenty minutes before Evelyn’s thugs arrived. He’s downstairs eating pancakes with Mrs. Adler, completely unaware of any trouble.”

Nora let out a long, shuddering breath, tears finally spilling over her lashes and tracking down her bruised cheeks. The sheer magnitude of relief made her whole body tremble. “Thank God... thank you, Mr. Calder...”

“Roman,” he corrected quietly. He reached out with a thumb, clumsily wiping a tear from her cheek. The intimacy of the gesture made Nora’s breath catch. “You don’t ever have to call me Mr. Calder again.”

Nora looked up into his eyes, seeing a depth of emotion there that she had never expected from Baltimore’s most feared underworld boss. “You heard her in the warehouse, didn't you?”

“Every word,” Roman replied, his jaw tightening as the dark fury returned to his eyes. “I heard her confess to the framing. I heard her threaten your brother. And I want you to know something, Nora: the woman who put those marks on your wrists will never walk free in this city again.”

Before Nora could reply, a soft knock sounded at the bedroom door, and Marco stepped inside, holding a secure tablet.

“Boss,” Marco said, nodding respectfully to Nora before looking at Roman. “We’ve dismantled Evelyn’s assets. Her father’s shipping firm has been hit with three federal audits we arranged overnight, and her personal bank accounts have been frozen under suspicion of conspiracy and kidnapping. As for Miss Sterling herself... she tried to catch a flight to London out of BWI an hour ago.”

Roman’s lips curved into a cold, dangerous smile. “Did she make it?”

“Our men intercepted her at the private terminal,” Marco said smoothly. “She’s currently sitting in a holding cell down at the dock warehouse, waiting for you.”

Roman stood up, buttoning his suit jacket and straightening his cuffs. He looked down at Nora, his expression softening once more. “Rest, Nora. I have some unfinished business to attend to. When I get back, we’re going to talk about what comes next—for you, for your brother, and for us.”
