Chapter 5 - The Rebuilding PhaseBy the second week, the legal proceedings against Trevor and Renee had accelerated into a public spectacle.

Financial news outlets ran front-page exposés on the collapse of Vance Enterprises, detailing how a facade of high-end real estate development had been propped entirely by massive, hidden lines of credit from Ashford Global Capital. The public learned about the fake loans, the offshore shell accounts, and the systematic embezzlement scheme orchestrated by Trevor and his mistress.

Renee’s high-society friends vanished overnight. Her social media accounts were deactivated, and her family reportedly distanced themselves entirely from the scandal as federal prosecutors piled on multiple counts of conspiracy and wire fraud.

Trevor, meanwhile, found himself sitting in a high-security holding facility, abandoned by the high-priced attorneys he could no longer afford. He attempted to send three different letters through his public defender, begging me to drop the personal charges and settle out of court.

I didn't even open the envelopes. I handed them straight to Marcus with instructions to forward them directly to the federal prosecutor handling the fraud case.

On a crisp Tuesday morning, I drove downtown to the Ashford Global Capital headquarters for the first time as an active senior executive.

The building was a towering monolith of glass and steel piercing the city skyline—a monument to power, precision, and unyielding discipline. As I walked through the grand revolving doors, the security guards straightened sharply, and the lobby receptionist stood up with a respectful nod.

“Good morning, Ms. Ashford,” she said clearly.

“Good morning, Sarah,” I replied, stepping into the private executive elevator.

The penthouse office on the forty-fifth floor was breathtaking. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the entire financial district. My father was already standing by the mahogany desk, reviewing a stack of architectural blueprints for our upcoming urban renewal projects.

“Welcome to the real world, Elena,” Dad said, looking up with a proud, tired smile.

“It feels remarkably spacious,” I remarked, walking over to the glass and looking out at the city below.

“The board has formally approved your appointment as Vice President of Strategic Investments,” Dad continued, handing me a heavy leather-bound folder. “Your first major task will be overseeing the acquisition of the commercial lots reclaimed from Trevor’s liquidated assets. We’re going to tear down his old headquarters and build a community health center and public park in its place.”

I opened the folder, running my fingers over the official corporate seal embossed in gold foil.

“A park,” I murmured, a genuine smile spreading across my face. “I like that. Let something good grow where nothing but greed used to live.”
