Chapter 3 - The Highway Chase(Length: ~1800 words)

"Nurse, check his vitals!" Officer Hays commanded as he stepped into the ICU room, pushing a protesting Vanessa ahead of him in handcuffs.

"I'm fine... Mom, go..." Daniel rasped from the bed, his voice trembling with urgency. "The safe... the ledger is inside... everything he stole..."

Officer Hays looked at me sharply. "Mrs. Mercer, what is he talking about?"

"Marcus is driving to my home right now," I said, my voice rising in panic. "My house is isolated, ten miles outside town! He’s going to break in and destroy the evidence!"

"Officer Morales!" Hays barked into his shoulder radio. "Issue an immediate BOLO for Marcus Vance. Black SUV, license plate ending in 4-8-2. He is fleeing a felony assault scene and heading north on Highway 9!"

"We can't rely on a highway patrol blockade to stop him before he reaches my property," I told Officer Hays. "I have to get back to my house."

"You can't drive five hours after staying up all night, ma'am," Hays insisted. "You're exhausted."

"My husband built that house," I said, staring the officer straight in the eye with a fierce, motherly resolve he couldn't argue with. "And my son bled to protect what's inside it. I am going home."

Thirty minutes later, after ensuring two state troopers were stationed outside Daniel’s hospital room to protect him from any associate of Vanessa's, I was back behind the wheel of my sedan.

The morning sun broke through the gray clouds as I merged onto Interstate 95 North.

My coffee sat untouched in the cup holder. My hands gripped the steering wheel tightly as tires hummed against the asphalt.

My phone rang through my car’s Bluetooth system. It was Rachel—my neighbor who lived half a mile down the rural road from my house.

"Eleanor!" Rachel’s voice sounded flustered. "Are you back in town? I just saw a large black SUV turn down your gravel driveway going way too fast!"

My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit.

Marcus was already there. He must have taken the toll express route, driving like a madman to outrun the police bulletin.

"Rachel, listen to me very carefully," I said, keeping my voice steady despite the horror clawing at my throat. "Do not go near my house. Call 911 immediately and tell them an intruder is breaking into my property. I am twenty minutes away."

"Eleanor, who is that in your driveway?!" Rachel gasped. "He just backed his truck straight up to your porch!"

"Stay inside your house, Rachel! Call the state police!" I yelled, slamming my foot down on the gas pedal.

My engine roared as the speedometer needle swept past eighty miles per hour.

Trees flashed past my windows in a blur of green and gray. Five hours of exhaustion disappeared under a surge of pure adrenaline.

As I took the rural exit toward my property, two state police cruisers tore past me in the opposite direction, their red and blue lights flashing violently, sirens wailing into the morning air.

They were heading toward my road!

I turned onto the long, winding gravel driveway leading to my farmhouse.

Up ahead, smoke was billowing into the sky.

My heart stopped.

"No... no, no, no!" I screamed, pulling up onto the lawn.

The front porch door of my house had been kicked off its hinges. Marcus stood near the side of the house, holding a red gas can, pouring fuel along the base of the wooden garage structure! He was trying to burn the house down to destroy the safe!

When he heard my tires screeching on the gravel, Marcus spun around, his face wild and enraged, holding a heavy iron crowbar in his right hand.

"You're too late, old woman!" Marcus roared over the sound of the approaching sirens. "If I can't open the box, nobody gets what's inside!"
