Chapter 7 - The Recovery(Length: ~1800 words)

Three months later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the manicured lawn of Daniel’s home—a beautiful three-story house overlooking the river.
The dark memories of that violent night had been swept away. The house had been redecorated, the locks changed, and the old office where the assault took place was now filled with bright light, fresh flowers, and new wooden furniture.
I stood on the back patio, wearing a warm yellow summer dress, holding a pitcher of fresh lemonade.
On the lawn, Daniel was playing fetch with his golden retriever, Buster.
His head injuries had healed completely, his surgical shoulder scar was fading, and his energy had returned in full force. Beside him stood Rachel—my neighbor who had helped alert the police the day of the break-in—laughing as the dog clumsily chased a tennis ball across the grass.
The front doorbell chimed inside the house.
I walked through the sunlit living room and opened the front door.
Standing on the porch was District Attorney Sarah Sterling, wearing a bright floral dress instead of her usual courtroom suit, carrying a thick blue legal folder.
"Sarah! Come in!" I greeted her warmly, bringing her into the foyer.
"Good afternoon, Eleanor," Sarah smiled, giving me a gentle hug. "I brought the final court paperwork for Daniel to review."
Daniel walked in from the patio, wiping his hands on a towel. "Sarah! Good to see you. Is it official?"
Sarah opened the folder on the dining table.
"The judge signed the final criminal decree this morning," Sarah announced. "Vanessa Vance pled guilty to attempted capital murder, corporate embezzlement, and witness tampering. She has been sentenced to thirty-five years in the state women's correctional facility without parole eligibility for twenty-five years."
Daniel let out a long, quiet breath, nodding slowly.
"And Marcus?" I asked.
"Marcus received forty years for attempted murder, arson, burglary, and federal weapons charges," Sarah added. "Their Panama shell accounts have been completely liquidated by federal marshals, and eight point two million dollars has been returned to Mercer Logistics' corporate treasury."
"And the divorce?" Daniel asked softly.
"The civil court granted a full, fault-based dissolution of marriage on grounds of felony violence," Sarah smiled, handing him a stamped document. "Vanessa receives zero spousal support, zero asset division, and has been stripped of every legal connection to your name."
Daniel took the paper, staring at the official state seal for a long moment before letting out a light, genuine laugh that echoed warmly through the sunlit house.

"It really is over," Daniel said, looking up at me.
"It's over, son," I said, taking his hand. "Now, your real life begins."
