Chapter 1 - The Weight of 317The reinforced steel door of Barracks C clicked shut with a heavy, final sound that reverberated through the hollow concrete corridor. Riley Quinn stood motionless in the dim fluorescent light, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Inside the envelope Captain Hale had handed her before vanishing into the administrative wing lay the second metal tag. It bore the exact same jagged stamping: 317.

The first tag had fallen from her hair during the hazing ritual orchestrated by Sergeant Cole Mercer—a calculated intimidation tactic designed to break her spirit on her very first morning. But as Riley stared at the two identical fragments side by side on the cold metal desk of her temporary quarters, the terrifying reality crystallized. This was never about hazing. It was about erasure.

Private First Class Emma Castillo hadn't died in a random single-vehicle accident three months ago. She had stumbled onto a shadow economy operating within the installation—a systematic smuggling ring utilizing encrypted military logistics channels. And tag 317 was the key to unlocking the entire conspiracy.

"Looking for answers, Sergeant?"

Riley whipped around. Standing in the doorway of the barracks common area was Specialist Aaron Pike. The casual, swaggering menace he had projected earlier that morning was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, calculated stillness. His hand rested casually near his side, but his eyes tracked Riley's every micro-movement.

"I'm looking for my transfer orders, Pike," Riley replied, her voice steady, masking the adrenaline surging through her veins. "Though it seems command misplaced a few critical pages."

"Command loses a lot of things out here," Aaron said, taking a slow step into the room. "Files. Equipment. People. You should have requested a posting in logistics, Quinn. Field assignments have a way of... complicating a career."

"Is that a warning?"

"It's professional advice." Aaron’s gaze dropped briefly to the open evidence envelope on the desk. "Some numbers aren't meant to be read. And some people who start counting them end up taking permanent leave."

Before Aaron could close the distance, the shrill ring of an encrypted tactical radio pierced the silence. Aaron flinched, pulling a ruggedized handset from his tactical vest. He listened for three seconds, his face draining of color, before casting a final, venomous glare at Riley.

"Enjoy your stay in Barracks C, Quinn," he hissed, turning on his heel and vanishing down the service stairwell.

Riley didn't hesitate. She snatched the metal tags, secured them inside the lining of her tactical boot, and strode out into the corridor. If Aaron was spooked, it meant Captain Hale's internal sweep was moving faster than the conspirators anticipated. But it also meant Riley was running out of time.

She needed to reach the installation's secure mainframe archives before the midnight lockdown. And the only person who had access codes deep enough to bypass the sector firewall was Major Lawson—the very officer whose name kept appearing in Emma Castillo's encrypted personal logs.
