Chapter 7 - The Final ManifestThree days later, Riley stood in the quiet archive room of the regional federal headquarters. The fluorescent lights here hummed softly, lacking the aggressive industrial buzz of Barracks C.

On the wooden desk before her sat a single cardboard box containing her personal effects, along with the two small metal tags bearing the number 317.
The door opened softly, and Captain Hale stepped inside, holding a pair of steaming paper cups of coffee. He handed one to Riley, leaning back against the edge of the desk.
"Lawson's court-martial docket has been formally scheduled," Hale said, blowing gently across the surface of his coffee. "He's refusing to cooperate, but the financial audit of the logistics accounts speaks for itself. The entire contraband network has been dismantled from the top down."
"And the soldiers from Barracks C?" Riley asked, taking a slow sip.
"Reassigned to remote maintenance details pending administrative discharge," Hale said. "Cole Mercer tried to claim it was all unauthorized unit hazing. The federal prosecutor laughed him out of the interrogation room."
Riley looked down at the metal tags resting in her palm. The jagged edges caught the pale morning sunlight streaming through the window.
"Emma Castillo recorded seventeen seconds of audio," Riley murmured softly. "That was all it took to start an earthquake."
"Because someone finally listened," Hale added, his gaze meeting hers. "Most people prefer the official story. It's safer. It doesn't require standing alone in a barracks corridor while three men hold a pair of clippers to your head."
"Fear only works when you pretend you have something left to lose, Captain," Riley replied, her voice calm and steady.
She dropped the two metal tags into the cardboard box, the metallic clink signaling the definitive closure of a dark chapter.
"Where to next?" Hale asked, finishing his coffee.

Riley zipped up her jacket, adjusted her collar, and picked up the box.
"Back to the field," she said, a faint, resolute smile touching her lips. "There are a lot of rooms out there that need owning."
