Chapter 5 - Shadows of the PastBy noon, the atmosphere at the private hospital suite was serene, a stark contrast to the financial carnage unfolding across town.

Emily was propped up in bed, IV fluids slowly restoring her color, wearing soft cotton pajamas. Dr. Vance had finished his examination, and the initial medical reports were horrifying: deep tissue bruising, severe malnutrition, hair thinning due to extreme stress, and two hairline fractures in her wrist from where she had been violently restrained.
I sat beside her, holding her hand, gently running my fingers over her knuckles.
"The doctor says you're going to be okay, Em," I whispered softly. "It's going to take time, but you're safe now."
Emily looked at the window, where two of Sam’s heavily armed security officers stood guard in the hallway. "They were so cruel, Daniel. When you deployed... it started small. Your mother would come over and take things. Silverware, paintings. She said they were family heirlooms that didn't belong to a 'common girl.'"
My jaw tightened, but I kept my breathing steady. "Go on."
"Then Ryan brought his friends," she continued, a tear slipping down her nose. "They changed the locks. They took my phone, my laptop. They told me if I stepped outside, they’d call the police and tell them I was strung out on drugs. They had a corrupt cop on their payroll—a guy named Detective Miller."
I froze. "Miller? Precinct Four?"
Emily nodded weakly. "Yes. He came to the house twice. He threatened to arrest me, to frame me for grand theft if I tried to leave. He was the one who grabbed my wrists when I tried to run out the front door three weeks ago."
I felt a dark, ancient instinct rise within me. A corrupt local cop helping my family abuse my wife while I was deployed under U.S. Central Command.
I whipped out my phone and dialed Marcus immediately.
"Marcus. Detective Miller, Precinct Four. What do we have on him?"
Marcus answered instantly. "Already ahead of you, Daniel. We cross-referenced Ryan's bank statements from the decoy account. Ryan made three separate cash payments to Miller over the last ninety days, disguised as 'consulting fees' to a shell LLC."
"Is it enough for federal oversight?"
"It's enough for the FBI's Public Corruption Task Force," Marcus replied, his voice laced with grim satisfaction. "I just spoke with Special Agent Harris. When a military spouse is targeted while a service member is deployed overseas, it triggers federal jurisdiction under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, combined with extortion and human rights violations. They're wrapping up the warrants right now."
I looked back at Emily. She was watching me, her eyes filled with a mixture of awe and residual fear.

"Daniel... what are you going to do?" she asked softly.
I leaned down and kissed her forehead. "I'm going to make sure none of them ever see the light of day again, baby. Rest now. I have one more stop to make."
