Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at MidnightThe rain was falling in torrential sheets by 11:30 PM over the North Hill neighborhood.

Inside Eleanor's living room, terror had reached a fever pitch. Victor and his men had returned thirty minutes early, refusing to wait until midnight. They were currently pulling expensive paintings off the walls and smashing electronics, packing anything of value into duffel bags while Ryan sat tied to a dining chair, crying hysterically with a bruised jaw.

"Please, Victor! My mom has jewelry upstairs! Take the jewelry!" Ryan whimpered, blood dripping from his lip onto his ruined designer shirt.

"Shut up!" Victor barked, slapping him hard across the face. "Your mom’s jewelry is fake cubic zirconia! I had my guy look at it! You people are completely worthless!"

Eleanor was huddled in the corner of the kitchen, clutching a kitchen knife with shaking hands, terrified to step into the hallway.

Suddenly, bright red and blue lights illuminated the curtained windows, flashing rapidly through the rain.

Searchlights cut through the glass, blinding everyone inside.

FLASH-BANG!

A deafening explosion rocked the front porch, shattering the bay windows into a million sparkling shards of glass! Smoke flooded the living room instantly.

"POLICE! SWAT! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! ON THE GROUND NOW!"

Heavy boots kicked open the front door. Armed tactical officers in full body armor poured into the house, laser sights cutting through the thick white smoke.

"Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" Victor screamed, throwing his knife away and dropping to his knees, raising his hands instantly. His henchmen slammed themselves onto the floor.

"GET DOWN! DOWN ON THE FLOOR!" an officer screamed, tackling Ryan's chair to the ground, pinning him beneath the wooden frame.

Eleanor dropped her kitchen knife, screaming in absolute terror as officers breached the kitchen, grabbing her by her shoulders and forcing her down onto the hardwood floor.

Within five minutes, the entire house was secured.

Standing in the shattered doorway, wearing a long black trench coat, was Special Agent Harris of the FBI, accompanied by Marcus.

Harris walked slowly through the smoke, looking at the scene of absolute chaos: the tied-up loan sharks, the broken furniture, the terrified, weeping family.

Harris pulled out a fresh stack of federal arrest warrants.

"Eleanor Lawson? Ryan Lawson?" Harris asked smoothly.

Ryan looked up from the floor, his face covered in dust and tears. "Officer! Help us! They tried to rob us!"

Agent Harris chuckled dryly. "Oh, the local police will handle Mr. Victor here for extortion and burglary. But as for you two... you're coming with me."

"On what charges?!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking as handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists. "We're the victims here!"

Marcus stepped forward, unbuttoning his coat, holding up his tablet.

"On charges of federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, bank fraud, tax evasion, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to violate the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act," Marcus stated calmly. "The U.S. Attorney's office has denied bail due to flight risk and connections to organized crime elements."

Eleanor looked past Marcus, searching the rain-soaked street outside through the broken bay window.

Parked near the end of the driveway was my black F-250.

I was sitting in the driver's seat, watching the flashing lights, my face illuminated by the soft amber glow of the dashboard. I didn't look angry. I didn't look triumphant. I just watched them with the cold, unyielding judgment of a man who had survived their worst storm and come out standing.

As the agents dragged Eleanor out into the rain, she locked eyes with me through the windshield.

"Daniel!" she screamed into the storm, her voice swallowed by the thunder. "DANIEL! PLEASE!"

I rolled up my window, put the truck in drive, and pulled away into the night.
