Chapter 8 - The Ghost from Precinct 12The storm broke on a Thursday night.

Harper was sitting in the study, organizing archive files, when the heavy oak doors burst open. Vance rushed in, breathing hard, his face pale beneath his dark stubble.
“Boss, we have a breach,” Vance said urgently. “Federal marshals, accompanied by state troopers. They’ve surrounded the perimeter. And at the front gate...”
Vance hesitated, glancing sideways at Harper.
Harper’s blood ran cold. “Who is it?”
“It’s Lawson,” Vance said grimly. “He made bail through a corrupt federal judge in Providence. He’s got an emergency writ of habeas corpus, claiming Mr. Ashford is holding a civilian hostage.”
Harper stood up so fast her chair screeched against the hardwood floor. “No. No, he can’t be here. He’ll kill us both.”
Gabriel stood up from behind his desk. He didn’t panic. His expression settled into a terrifying, absolute calm. He picked up his holster from the desk, strapping it over his black shirt with practiced efficiency.
“He’s playing his final card,” Gabriel said coldly. He walked over to Harper, taking her trembling hands in his. “Look at me, Harper. He is not touching you. Not today. Not ever.”
“Gabriel, there are cops out there—state troopers, federal agents—” Harper stammered, tears spilling over her lashes. “If you shoot them, you’ll be hunted by the entire government.”
“I don't need to shoot troopers,” Gabriel replied with a chilling, confident smile. “I just need to let a cornered rat run into a trap.”
Within moments, heavy boots echoed through the grand foyer downstairs. Shouting bounced off the marble walls.
“Federal Agents! Open up!”
The double doors of the study flew open.
Derek Lawson stood in the doorway, flanked by two armed state troopers. Derek looked unhinged—his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot and wide with manic triumph. A nasty grin split his face as he spotted Harper standing next to Gabriel.
“There she is!” Derek shouted, pointing his finger triumphantly. “That’s my wife! Being held captive by a known criminal! Grab him!”
The state troopers raised their weapons, aiming directly at Gabriel. “Gabriel Ashford, put your hands behind your back! You’re under arrest for kidnapping and racketeering!”
Gabriel didn’t raise his hands. He didn’t flinch. He slowly turned around, walking over to his desk, and picked up a thick, manila legal folder.
“Kidnapping?” Gabriel asked smoothly, tossing the folder onto the desk in front of the lead trooper. “I think there’s been a misunderstanding, officer. Miss Queen is an employee of the Ashford Foundation. Furthermore, she filed for legal separation three weeks ago.”
“That’s a lie!” Derek screamed, lunging forward. “She’s my property! Arrest him!”
“And as for you, Officer Lawson,” Gabriel continued, his voice echoing through the silent room like thunder, “you might want to check the contents of that folder before you try to execute a corrupt warrant signed by a disgraced judge who was arrested forty minutes ago in Providence for taking bribes.”
The lead trooper frowned, picked up the folder, and flipped it open. Inside were signed federal indictments, bank records tracing offshore bribe payments to Derek and his associates, and sworn affidavits from three fellow officers in Precinct 12 detailing Derek’s systematic falsification of evidence.

The trooper’s face went pale. He slowly lowered his weapon, looking at Derek with absolute disgust.
“Lawson,” the trooper said, his voice hard. “You’re coming with us.”
