Chapter 9 - The ReckoningDerek stared at the open folder in the trooper’s hands, his manic grin evaporating into sheer, unadulterated panic.

“No! No, this is forged! Ashford framed me!” Derek screamed, lunging toward Harper with a guttural roar, pulling a concealed pistol from his waistband. “If I’m going down, you’re coming with me, you bitch!”
Before Derek’s finger could even tighten on the trigger, Gabriel moved.
It wasn't a fight; it was an execution of physics. Gabriel closed the distance in a single explosive bound. His hand lashed out, gripping Derek’s wrist with bone-crushing force and twisting it upward.
A sharp crack echoed through the study as Derek’s wrist snapped. The pistol clattered harmlessly onto the Persian rug.
Before Derek could scream, Gabriel drove his knee straight into Derek’s chest, sending the corrupt cop flying backward across the room. Derek crashed hard into the mahogany bookshelf, sending books raining down before collapsing limply onto the floor, gasping for air, clutching his broken wrist.
The two state troopers stood frozen, staring in shock, their weapons half-raised, realizing too late that they had been used as pawns in a setup engineered by the most dangerous man in New England.
Gabriel stepped over Derek’s writhing body, adjusting his cuffs with cold, absolute precision. He looked at the lead trooper with dead, slate-gray eyes.
“Take him out of my house,” Gabriel commanded softly. “And if he ever breathes the same air as Miss Queen again, make sure his next cell doesn't have a window.”
The troopers swallowed hard, grabbed Derek by the shoulders, and hauled the whimpering, broken man out of the study and down the grand staircase, their footsteps fading into the heavy silence of the night.
When the heavy front doors slammed shut, the study became tomb-like again.
Harper stood by the desk, trembling from head to toe, tears streaming down her face—not of fear, but of an unimaginable, weightless freedom.
Gabriel walked slowly toward her. The rage in his eyes vanished instantly, replaced by a deep, unwavering tenderness. He reached out, pulling her small, shaking frame into his arms, wrapping her tightly against his chest.
“It’s over, Harper,” Gabriel whispered into her hair, his voice thick with emotion. “He’s gone. He can never hurt you again.”
Harper buried her face in his shoulder, gripping the fabric of his shirt as she finally let go of every tear, every nightmare, and every drop of pain she had carried for three long years.

“Thank you,” she sobbed softly against his chest. “Thank you, Gabriel.”
Gabriel kissed the top of her head, his arms tightening around her as if he would never let her go.
