Chapter 10 - The Horizon is OursThe afternoon sun blazed down on Savannah’s golden coastline, turning the Atlantic into a sparkling sheet of hammered diamonds.

Maya and my son Leo squealed with absolute delight as a gentle wave washed over their bare ankles, leaving wet, glittering trails in the sand. They were chasing ghost crabs near the shoreline, their laughter ringing out like bells against the steady, rhythmic roar of the tide.
I stood a few yards away, my toes buried in the warm sand, wearing a simple linen dress and sunglasses. The ocean breeze caught my hair, lifting it gently off my shoulders.
My father sat nearby on a folding beach chair, watching his grandchildren with a serene, deeply contented smile.
"You know," my father called out over the sound of the surf, adjusting his sunhat, "you built quite a life out of the ashes, Brooke."
I walked over, leaning against the back of his chair and looking out toward the infinite horizon where the sky met the sea.
"I didn't build it alone, Dad," I replied softly. "You gave me the foundation, but my children gave me the reason."
Maya suddenly came running back up the beach, holding a wet, glittering seashell cupped carefully in both of her small hands. She rushed up to me, her eyes wide with excitement.
"Look what I found, Mommy! It's perfect!"
I knelt down in the sand, bringing myself eye-level with my daughter. Her dark curls blew softly across her forehead, and those bright, beautiful eyes shone with unbridled joy and absolute safety.
"It's the most beautiful shell I've ever seen, sweetheart," I smiled, gently kissing her cheek.
May you like
She beamed proudly, placing the shell safely in my palm before turning right back around to chase the waves with her brother.
I closed my hand gently around the shell, feeling its smooth, enduring strength. The past was a storm that had long since passed. The horizon ahead of us was wide open, bright, and entirely our own.
