Chapter 2 - The Audit TrailThe hospital room felt suddenly smaller, the sterile air thick with the realization of just how deep Garrett’s betrayal ran. My father’s voice on the line was steady, but beneath the calm exterior, I could hear the dangerous edge of a man whose family had just been threatened.

"I'm dispatching my private jet from Savannah right now, Brooke," my father said, his tone unwavering. "And I'm bringing our chief legal counsel with me. Give me the name of the hospital and your room number. No one touches you, and no one touches my grandchildren."

"Dad, don't make a scene yet," I managed to say, clutching my phone as another contraction rolled through my body, sharper this time. "I need to deliver these babies safely first. But... when you get here, look at the Beacon Communications wire transfer receipt Garrett left on my tray. He used our household savings—my mother's inheritance—to fund Kendra's shell company."

A dead, freezing silence fell over the line. When my father spoke again, his voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the terrifying weight of a thunderstorm about to break.

"He did what?"

"Just get here, Dad. I love you."

I hung up just as Dr. Benson and a team of nurses swarmed back into the room. The monitors were beeping with increasing urgency. The second baby’s heart rate was decelerating, signaling distress. All thoughts of Garrett, of corporate embezzlement, and of the $250,000 hush-money check vanished from my mind. The only thing that mattered in that blinding flash of pain was bringing my son and daughter safely into the light.

"Push, Brooke," Dr. Benson commanded, her eyes locking onto mine with fierce encouragement. "You're strong, and your babies are fighting. Let's meet them."

For the next two hours, the delivery room became a battlefield of grit, sweat, and primal survival. I gripped the hospital rails until my knuckles turned white, channeling every ounce of hurt, betrayal, and fury into raw physical strength. I wasn't just fighting the pain of labor; I was fighting for a future where my children would never have to bow to a man like Garrett Hale.

At 4:14 AM, the sharp, piercing cry of a newborn pierced the room.

"A healthy baby girl," Dr. Benson announced, lifting a tiny, squirming bundle wrapped in pink cloth and placing her gently on my chest. She was perfect—dark hair, tiny fingers clutching at the air, breathing on her own.

"And here comes her brother," another nurse cheered.

Seconds later, a second, lusty cry echoed through the room. A baby boy, strong and vigorous, was placed right beside his sister. Twins. My son and my daughter. They were here, safe, breathing, and completely outside of Garrett's control.

As the medical team cleaned up and settled us into recovery, exhaustion washed over me like a tidal wave. I held both of my babies close, tears spilling over my cheeks. They didn't have Garrett's last name. They had my strength, and they had a grandfather who owned the very empire Garrett was trying to conquer.

Little did Garrett know, his corporate ladder had just run out of rungs.
