Chapter 4 - The House of CardsThe collapse of Garrett Hale’s meticulously constructed life was breathtakingly fast.

Within forty-eight hours of his arrest at the hospital, the dominos fell with the precision of a controlled demolition. Pacific Harbor Freight’s internal security team, backed by federal marshals, raided Garrett’s corporate office. They seized his laptop, his company-issued phone, and every physical file in his executive suite.
Kendra Mercer, realizing she was about to take the entire fall for the $155,000 embezzlement scheme while Garrett tried to pin the mastermind label entirely on her, cracked under pressure within three hours of questioning. She handed over text messages, encrypted emails, and voice memos where Garrett explicitly mapped out how to hide the stolen funds from both the company auditors and me.
On Monday morning, the news hit the corporate intranet: Executive Vice President of Sales Garrett Hale Terminated for Cause, Pending Federal Prosecution.
I was sitting in the sunny living room of my father’s estate in Savannah, having discharged from the hospital over the weekend with my twins safely tucked into their custom bassinets. The crisp coastal breeze drifted through the open French doors, carrying the scent of salt water and blooming jasmine. For the first time in six years, I wasn't walking on eggshells. I wasn't worrying about whether dinner was cooked right or if my career aspirations were "inconveniencing" my husband.
My phone buzzed continuously on the coffee table—a barrage of frantic, desperate text messages from Garrett’s personal number.
“Brooke, please pick up. It’s all a misunderstanding.”“Your father is destroying me. He’s freezing all my personal assets. I can’t even pay my bail bondman.”“Please, Brooke. For the sake of our marriage. Let’s talk.”
I picked up the phone, scrolled to his contact name, and calmly pressed Block.
Then I opened my email and reviewed the draft settlement agreement prepared by my father’s top-tier legal team. Because Garrett was convicted of felony financial fraud involving marital assets, the divorce proceedings were entirely one-sided. Every cent of my mother’s inheritance he had stolen was returned with compound interest, seized directly from his hidden offshore accounts. His stock options were voided, his retirement pension was forfeited to cover corporate damages, and his parental rights to the twins were formally terminated under abandonment and criminal endangerment clauses.
He was entirely, utterly ruined.
My father walked into the living room holding a silver tray with two cups of freshly brewed coffee, handing one to me with a warm, proud smile.
"How are my favorite grandchildren doing?" my father asked, glancing over at the twins sleeping peacefully side by side.
May you like
"They're sleeping like angels, Dad," I smiled, taking a sip of the coffee. "And for the first time in my life, I feel like I can finally breathe."
My father sat down on the sofa beside me, wrapping a strong, protective arm around my shoulders. "You earned every bit of this peace, Brooke. You survived a storm he thought would drown you. Now, it's time to build an empire of your own."
