Chapter 5 - The Ambush at the Summit

The National Press Club was packed to capacity. Flashbulbs went off like strobes the moment Julian and I stepped through the double doors and walked up to the podium.
Microphones from CNN, Bloomberg, Forbes, and the Washington Post were clustered together, awaiting blood.
“Mrs. Hartwell! Is it true that Grant Whitmore engaged in corporate espionage against your family?”
“Miss Hartwell, what is your response to Madison Vale’s claims that your marriage was already over before last night?”
“Did you conceal your identity to orchestrate a corporate takeover?”
I raised one hand, and the room instantly silenced. The authority in my posture was unmistakable.
“Three years ago, I entered a marriage under the belief that mutual respect and creative partnership were the foundations of a shared life,” I began, my voice clear, measured, and broadcast live across every major network. “Instead, my intellectual property was stolen, my work was monetized without my consent, and my presence was erased to manufacture a fraudulent public narrative. Today, Hartwell Global announces the launch of the *Potomac Horizon Project*—a five-hundred-million-dollar, fully self-funded civic initiative that will restore D.C.’s waterfront safely, sustainably, and honorably.”
Suddenly, the side doors burst open.
“Evelyn!”
Grant came barreling through the media scrum, disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, his tie crooked. Beside him, Madison was filming on her phone, desperately trying to salvage content for her bleeding follower count.
Security stepped forward instantly, hands resting on their holsters, but I signaled for them to hold.
“Grant,” I said into the microphone, allowing every camera in the country to capture his frantic degradation. “You are violating a legal restraining order.”
“Evelyn, you lied to me!” Grant yelled, his voice cracking with humiliation and rage as reporters turned their lenses toward him. “You lived in my home for three years and kept your billions a secret! You set me up! You wanted me to fail!”
The room gasped at his audacity.
I didn't blink. I stepped around the podium and looked down at him from the elevated stage.
“I kept my fortune separate because I wanted a marriage based on love, Grant, not balance sheets. And what did you do with that gift? You stole my architectural designs, gave my title to an internet personality, and stood by while your mother hit me in front of three hundred people.”
“We built that company together!” Grant screamed, sweating through his shirt. “Those blueprints were developed during our marriage! Under martial property laws, Whitmore Development owns half of that design!”
Julian stepped forward, leaning into the microphone, his expression icy and formidable. “Mr. Whitmore, I suggest you review the copyright filings registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office four years ago—six months before you even met Evelyn. The intellectual property belongs exclusively to the Hartwell Foundation. Furthermore, the Department of Justice has just issued an inquiry into Whitmore Development for presenting fraudulent structural safety certifications to the city council.”
Grant’s face turned an ashen shade of gray. “What... what certifications?”
“You cut the storm surge foundations by forty percent, Grant,” I said, my voice cutting through his panic like a razor. “You gambled with human lives to buy Madison jewelry. You are not a developer. You are an embezzler. And by five o'clock today, your board will remove you as CEO.”
Madison dropped her phone, her eyes widening in horror as she realized the ship wasn't just taking on water—it was already on the ocean floor.
“Security,” Julian said softly. “Escort these trespassers out.”
May you like
As four burly guards pinned Grant’s arms and dragged him backward through the flashbulbs, he screamed my name until his voice tore. I turned my back on him without a single tremor of regret.
