Chapter 6 - The Rats Abandon Ship

By midnight, the fallout was catastrophic.
The board of Whitmore Development met in an emergency session and voted unanimously to strip Grant of his CEO title and voting shares. His personal accounts were frozen by bank creditors, and the city council canceled their hearing entirely, issuing an immediate revocation of the waterfront development permit.
In a rented townhome in Virginia, Celeste Whitmore sat amid unpacked boxes, frantically calling the managers of every country club, spa, and boutique in D.C.
“What do you mean my card is declined?” Celeste shrieked into her phone. “I am Celeste Whitmore! My family has been on your donor wall for twenty years!”
“Mrs. Whitmore,” the frosty voice on the other end responded. “Your accounts were backed by the Whitmore Family Trust, which was cross-collateralized with Whitmore Development. As of two hours ago, the firm has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Furthermore, the board has requested that you return the club’s honorary membership pins by noon tomorrow.”
The line went dead.
Celeste threw her phone against the wall, shattering the screen. “Uncivilized peasants! All of them!”
She turned on Madison, who was packing her designer dresses into three large suitcases. “And where do you think you’re going, you little opportunist?”
Madison zipped up her bag with a harsh tug. “I’m leaving, Celeste. What do you think I am, an idiot? Grant is completely broke. The FBI is looking into his shell companies, and the IRS just placed a lien on his cars. He’s going to federal prison!”
“You seduced my son!” Celeste screeched, lunging forward with claws bared. “You convinced him to throw away Evelyn! You swore your followers and your social connections would make him an international brand!”
Madison dodged her with an ugly sneer. “Grant didn't need any convincing. He loved having a shiny younger woman on his arm because he was insecure. He was always terrified that Evelyn was smarter than him—and guess what? She was! Now get out of my way, you crazy old bat, before I post the recording of you planning to push Evelyn down the stairs last Thanksgiving!”
Celeste froze, terror draining the blood from her face. “You... you recorded that?”
“I record everything,” Madison laughed, dragging her suitcases out the front door into an awaiting Uber. “Have fun in bankruptcy court, Mrs. Whitmore.”
Twenty minutes later, Madison released an ‘exclusive tell-all’ video across TikTok and Instagram, claiming she was an ‘innocent victim’ of Grant Whitmore’s manipulative lies. But the internet wasn't buying it. Sponsors severed ties, her follower count dropped by the hundreds of thousands every hour, and a horde of angry netizens bombarded her comments, cementing her public disgrace.
Meanwhile, Grant was sitting in the back of a cheap bar on the outskirts of Arlington, staring into an amber glass of whiskey, watching the news broadcast Evelyn’s triumphant face on every television screen.
She was radiant, surrounded by world-renowned architects, with Julian Vance standing proudly at her side.
Grant realized with sick, suffocating certainty that he hadn't just lost a $400 million contract.
