Chapter 7 - The Final Hearing

Two weeks later, the D.C. Municipal Oversight Committee held a public broadcast hearing regarding the fraudulent environmental safety filings submitted by Whitmore Development.

The gallery was packed with spectators, legal experts, and reporters.

I sat at the front table next to Julian and our chief structural engineer. Across the aisle sat Grant, looking hollow, his designer suit hanging loosely off his frame, accompanied by an exhausted public defender. Celeste sat in the back row, dressed in worn black linen, her head down, avoiding the eyes of women who had once begged for invitations to her galas.

The committee chairman banged his gavel. “We are here to review the forged structural integrity certifications for the waterfront redevelopment site. Mr. Whitmore, you have been subpoenaed to present your original engineering logs.”

Grant stood up, his knees visibly trembling. “Mr. Chairman... there has been an administrative error. My former wife, Evelyn, had access to the digital files. We believe she may have altered the logs to frame my company out of personal spite.”

A murmur of disgust rippled through the gallery. Even the committee members looked offended by his cowardice.

I stood up and approached the center podium, setting down a certified leather folder.

“Mr. Chairman,” I said, my voice ringing clear and steady through the chamber. “I submit into evidence the original, encrypted design ledgers stored within the Hartwell Global digital archive, complete with SHA-256 cryptographic timestamps dating back three years prior to Mr. Whitmore’s acquisition of the development site.”

I signaled to the tech team, and a series of side-by-side schematics appeared on the overhead monitors.

“On the left,” I explained, “are my original designs: a five-stage tidal retention wall engineered to withstand a fifty-year flood cycle. On the right are the construction orders signed by Grant Whitmore’s personal signature three weeks ago. He reduced the steel rebar density by fifty percent and used commercial sand fill instead of reinforced concrete, routing the $32 million in cost savings directly into an offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands under his own name.”

Grant turned white as paper. His public defender buried his face in his hands.

“Furthermore,” Julian announced, standing beside me, “forensic accountants from the Department of Justice have traced the receipt of those funds. They were utilized to purchase luxury jewelry, private jet charters, and offshore stock options for Mr. Whitmore and his associate, Miss Madison Vale.”

The committee chairman slammed his gavel with enough force to echo like a gunshot.

“Enough,” the chairman thundered. “This committee finds conclusive evidence of criminal fraud, gross negligence, and intentional endangerment of public safety. We hereby void all municipal permits previously granted to Whitmore Development. And we refer this matter immediately to the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia for immediate criminal prosecution.”

Two federal marshals stepped through the doors, their handcuffs gleaming under the fluorescent lights.

“Grant Whitmore,” one marshal announced, stepping behind Grant and twisting his arms behind his back. “You are under arrest for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and falsification of public safety documents.”

“Evelyn!” Grant screamed as the cold steel clicked around his wrists. “Evelyn, please! Tell them! We were husband and wife! You can’t let them send me to prison! Mother, do something!”

Celeste burst into hysterical sobs, covering her face as cameras flashed frantically around her son’s arrest.

I stood tall, watching the man who had abandoned and humiliated me being dragged out in chains. I felt no rage, no petty vindication.
