Chapter 6 - The In-Laws’ VisitBy Thursday afternoon, the net had tightened completely around Brandon Vance.

Stripped of his job, locked out of his credit cards, facing an impending criminal fraud indictment, and abandoned by his panicked mistress—who had happily handed over three hundred pages of incriminating text messages and audio transcripts to my attorney—Brandon was completely cornered.
Or so I thought.
I was working late at my Buckhead boutique, reviewing autumn inventory sheets, when the front glass door chimed loudly.
I looked up, expecting Elena or a late-evening customer. Instead, walking through the entrance with aggressive, high-society entitlement, were Doña Brenda and her husband, Don Fernando, trailed nervously by Brandon, who looked like a ghost of his former self—disheveled, unshaven, and wearing a wrinkled sports jacket.
My store manager, Elena, instantly stepped out from behind the cash wrap, her phone out and ready. “Ma’am, sir, you cannot harass the owner—'’
“Elena, it’s fine,” I said, standing up from my desk. “Let them in.”
Doña Brenda marched right up to my counter, her face contorted into a mask of furious, self-righteous indignation.
“How dare you?!” Doña Brenda shrieked, pointing a manicured finger directly at my face. “How dare you humiliate my son, ruin his career, and call the police on our family over a petty domestic dispute about dinner?! You ungrateful, manipulative little witch!”
I walked slowly around the counter, stopping three feet away from her. I didn't raise my voice. I didn't blink.
“Your son is a thief, Doña Brenda,” I said clearly, letting every syllable land like a hammer. “He embezzled forty thousand dollars from my business accounts behind my back to buy a luxury townhouse for his mistress. If we were living in a civilized society, he wouldn't just be facing a civil annulment; he’d be wearing an orange jumpsuit.”
Don Fernando stepped forward, puffing out his chest in an attempt at intimidation. “Watch your mouth, young lady! In our culture, a wife respects her husband and submits to his family! You brought shame upon our name by walking out of that wedding dinner like a common criminal!”
I looked at the older man, feeling an overwhelming wave of pity mixed with absolute disgust.
“Your culture?” I smiled coldly. “Your culture is built on exploiting women as unpaid servants while your golden-boy son commits white-collar felonies behind your backs. Well, I broke the mold. I am not your servant, and I am certainly not his wife anymore.”
Brandon stepped out from behind his parents, his eyes bloodshot and desperate, his voice cracking with pathetic pleading.
“Savannah, please... please drop the charges,” Brandon begged, taking a step toward me and holding his hands out in supplication. “Mom and Dad... they don't know about the money. They thought we were happy! Just tell your lawyer it was a misunderstanding. We can go to counseling! We can start over!”
I stared at him—at the man who, less than a week ago, had pointed at the kitchen door and told me to serve his family like a dog.
“Start over?” I asked softly. “Brandon, the only thing starting over is my single life, free of parasites. The police have the financial logs. The judge has the affidavit from your girlfriend. And my attorney is currently filing the final annulment decree.”
Doña Brenda let out a dramatic gasp, clutching her pearls. “You are destroying our family!”
May you like
“No, Brenda,” I said, turning my back on them and walking back toward my desk. “I’m just taking back what was mine. Elena, please escort these uninvited guests out of my store. And if they refuse to leave, press the silent alarm for the police.”
Elena grinned brightly, stepping forward with her phone dialed. “Right away, boss. Door’s this way, folks.”
