Chapter 9 - The Freedom BrunchTo celebrate the six-month anniversary of my legal freedom, I decided to host a very specific kind of gathering.

Instead of a traditional brunch at a country club, I rented out the rooftop garden of an upscale boutique hotel in downtown Atlanta. I invited thirty of my closest female friends, loyal business mentors, my hardworking store managers, and the fierce attorneys who had helped me dismantle Brandon’s fraudulent web.

There were no men serving as patriarchs. There were no mothers-in-law lurking in the shadows with archaic rules about who sits where.

There was only laughter, champagne flutes clinking against the bright autumn sky, and an extravagant, beautifully catered buffet featuring every single luxury item Brandon’s family had tried to deny me on that miserable wedding day—prime rib, jumbo shrimp cocktail, roasted vegetables, and a magnificent three-tier chocolate celebration cake.

As I stood at the podium on the rooftop terrace to toast my guests, I raised my glass high.

“To new beginnings,” I announced, smiling brightly as the afternoon sun caught the diamonds on my right hand. “To never settling for less than mutual respect. And to knowing that when someone tells you to go sit in the kitchen... you build your own house, and you lock the front door.”

The rooftop erupted in cheers, applause, and laughter that carried out over the sparkling expanse of the city below.
