Chapter 5 - The Silent EscapeI climbed out of the murky water onto the manicured grass, my dress heavy and dripping, water pooling in my leather heels. The laughter around the patio continued in scattered, uncomfortable waves as people tried to brush off the violent display as high-society family antics.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I didn't fling mud at my father or hurl curses at my sister.

I stood tall, wrung out the ends of my wet hair with one firm motion, and looked directly at my family one last time. Anthony was looking away, raising his glass to Julian's father as if nothing had happened. Haley was checking her reflection in a compact mirror, reapplying her lipstick.

I turned on my heel and walked toward the parking lot, leaving a trail of wet footprints on the pristine white stone pavers.

As I reached my ten-year-old reliable sedan parked in the far corner of the lot, a shadow moved from near the tree line.

It was Marcus.

Marcus was a young guy—twenty-four years old—hired as part of the videography crew for the wedding. He was holding a high-end cinema camera rigged with an external monitor and a directional shotgun microphone. He was trembling slightly, his eyes wide with disbelief.

"Miss... Miss Miller?" Marcus stuttered, holding out a clean micro-fiber towel from his gear bag. "Are you okay? That was... that was insane. I saw the whole thing."

I took the towel, wiping the dirty pond water from my face and neck. "I'm fine, Marcus. Thank you."

"No, you don't understand," Marcus said, stepping closer and dropping his voice to an urgent whisper. "I was stationed right beside the speaker tower on a wireless audio feed to capture ambient crowd sound. My shotgun mic was pointed straight at your father when you were standing at the base of the stage. And when he pulled you up..."

Marcus tapped the side of his camera rig.

"My audio recorder was running a dual-channel backup feed," he explained, his hands shaking with excitement. "It captured everything. His whisper to you before he pushed you. The threat. The sound of his hands striking your chest. The splash. And the way he laughed right after."

I froze, looking at the young videographer. "Is the audio clear?"

"It's crystal clear," Marcus said firmly. "You can hear him say: 'You ungrateful little brat... you do what I tell you to do' right before he shoves you. And I have the high-definition 4K video showing his hands making physical contact with your chest."

I stared at him, feeling a strange, burning heat replace the icy chill in my veins. "Why are you telling me this, Marcus? My father paid your boss a lot of money tonight."

Marcus set his jaw, a look of genuine disgust on his face. "My sister was bullied her whole life by people like your family, Miss Miller. Wealthy people who think they can erase whoever they want because they have money. My boss told us to delete the footage immediately when he saw what happened. He said Mr. Miller threatened to sue the company into the ground if any clip survived."

Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, metallic SanDisk flash drive.

"I backed up the raw, unedited camera files and the high-fidelity audio stem to this drive thirty seconds ago," Marcus said, pressing the cold piece of metal into my wet palm. "It's yours. Do whatever you need to do to protect yourself."

I closed my fingers tightly around the flash drive. The sharp edges bit into my skin, but it was the sweetest pain I had ever felt.

"Thank you, Marcus," I said softly.

"Give them hell, Caroline," he replied with a small grin.

I got into my car, placed the drive securely in my dry purse, started the engine, and drove off into the dark Hudson Valley night.
