Chapter 7 - The ConfrontationAt 11:00 AM, a sleek black SUV pulled up onto the gravel driveway of my Beacon house, screeching to a sudden halt.

My father, mother, and sister tumbled out of the vehicle. They looked radically different from the pristine figures of the previous night. Anthony wasn't wearing his custom tuxedo; he was in a wrinkled dress shirt, his hair disheveled, dark circles bruised under his red eyes. Rebecca looked pale and frantic, clutching her designer handbag like a shield. Haley was crying hysterically, her eyes swollen.
They marched up the newly sanded wooden steps of my front porch.
"Caroline!" Anthony bellowed, his voice hoarse. "Delete it! Delete that damn video right now!"
I remained sitting in my porch rocking chair, holding my coffee mug with both hands, looking at them with a calm, unbothered gaze.
"You're standing on private property, Anthony," I said smoothly. "If you step any closer, I will call the local police for trespassing."
"Private property?!" Haley shrieked, stepping around our father. "Carrie, do you have any idea what you've done?! Julian's family called off the post-wedding brunch! His mother told him this morning that if this scandal isn't fixed immediately, they are annulling the marriage! They think we're white-trash criminals!"
"You behaved like criminals," I replied, staring directly at her. "You tried to steal my house in front of two hundred people, Haley."
"It was just a misunderstanding!" Rebecca cried out, wringing her hands nervously. "Caroline, sweetie, your father was just trying to make a grand gesture for the family image! He was going to compensate you later! We never meant for you to take it so personally!"
"Compensate me?" I let out a soft, bitter laugh. "With what, Mom? Crayola crayons?"
Anthony stepped forward, shaking his finger at me, his face turning red again. "Listen to me, you ungrateful girl! My firm lost three major corporate clients this morning! The managing partners are meeting at noon to force me out of the company! My entire career—everything I built—is crumbling because of your petty revenge!"
"You built your career on an image of respectability," I said, standing up from my chair. I stepped closer to the porch railing, looking down at the three of them. "You lost your clients because the world finally saw who you actually are when the lights go down. You pushed me into a cold lake because I refused to let you rob me. I didn't ruin your life, Anthony. You did it to yourself on 4K camera."
"I am your father!" he yelled, his voice cracking with desperation. "You owe us!"

"I owe you nothing," I said, my voice cutting through his anger like a sharp blade. "I paid my debt for your fake love years ago. Now, leave my property."
Before Anthony could step up onto the porch, two police cruisers pulled onto my street, their lights quietly flashing as they parked behind my father's SUV.
