Chapter 8 - The Law steps InMy parents and sister froze as two local Beacon police officers stepped out of their vehicles and walked up the driveway.

"Is there a problem here, ma'am?" the lead officer, a tall woman with a stern face, asked me, keeping a watchful eye on Anthony.
"Officers!" Anthony blurted out, trying to instantly pivot back to his charismatic businessman persona. "Thank goodness you're here. This is a private family dispute. My daughter is having a mental breakdown and—"
"Mr. Anthony Miller?" the officer interrupted, pulling a crisp set of papers from her tactical vest.
Anthony blinked, startled. "Yes?"
"I am Detective Ramirez with the Dutchess County Sheriff's Department," she stated calmly. "We received multiple reports this morning regarding a physical assault that took place last night at the Hudson Valley Estate venue. We have reviewed the video evidence provided to our department by the venue's security detail and online records."
Anthony’s jaw dropped. "Video evidence? Now wait a minute, that was just family horseplay—"
"Sir, you grabbed an individual by the arm and forcibly shoved her off a four-foot platform into a body of water," Detective Ramirez said coldly. "We also have a sworn statement from a certified audio technician present at the scene confirming verbal threats made prior to the assault."
The detective stepped around my father and pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt.
"Anthony Miller, you are under arrest for simple assault, harassment in the second degree, and reckless endangerment."
"What?!" Haley screamed, clutching her head. "No! You can't arrest my dad! My wedding photos haven't even been delivered yet!"
"Hands behind your back, sir," the officer commanded, grabbing Anthony’s wrist.
The charismatic, powerful patriarch vanished instantly. As the steel cuffs clicked around his wrists, Anthony looked at me with eyes full of absolute terror and disbelief.
"Caroline! Tell them it was a joke!" he pleaded, his voice high and cracking. "Caroline! Speak to them! I'm your father!"
I stood on my porch, my arms crossed, watching silently as the police guided him down the steps and pushed him into the back of the cruiser. My mother was sobbing hysterically, leaning against the hood of their SUV, while Haley beat her fists uselessly against the air, screaming curses at the police, at the internet, and finally at me.

"I hate you!" Haley shrieked at me, tears tearing black mascara lines down her pale face. "You ruined everything! You ruined my life!"
"No, Haley," I said softly as the police cars drove away, their sirens blaring down the quiet street. "For the first time in my life, I just defended mine."
