Chapter 1 - The Banquet of ShadowsThe crystal chandeliers of the Bellaforte estate’s magnificent dining hall cast a cold, brilliant illumination over a table laden with roasted meats, silver platters, and vintage wines. Yet, beneath the veneer of high-society elegance, a suffocating tension hung in the air.

At the center of it all sat little Lucas, just six years old, strapped securely into a heavy upholstered dining chair. Senior matriarch Lavinia Bellaforte stood behind him with practiced cruelty, her arthritic fingers knotting a thick velvet fabric sash tightly around the boy’s waist, pinning him hard against the wooden backrest so he could barely twitch.
Lucas whimpered, his small hands grasping futilely at the armrests. “Grandma... please. I can’t breathe. Let me down.”
Lavinia didn't even look down at him. Her face remained carved from ancient, unyielding stone. “Quiet, child. A Bellaforte heir learns discipline before he learns luxury. You will sit there and watch your family eat until you understand what happens when you disobey house rules.”
Across the table, Damian Bellaforte—Lavinia’s thirty-year-old son and Antonio’s ambitious cousin—watched with a cruel, satisfied smirk. He reached across the white linen tablecloth, picked up Lucas’s untouched silver plate piled high with roast chicken and potatoes, and walked over to the corner of the room. With a deliberate, mocking flick of his wrist, Damian emptied the entire meal directly into a stainless-steel garbage container.
“There,” Damian sneered, wiping his hands on a silk napkin as he sauntered back to his seat. “Disobedient children don't deserve nourishment. Watching us enjoy our feast will teach you respect, boy.”
Lucas struggled helplessly against the velvet sash, hot tears spilling over his eyelashes. His throat tightened as he choked on his own sobs. To make matters worse, Damian reached out and shoved Lucas’s water glass a foot further across the table, pushing it completely out of his reach.
“Please... water...” Lucas choked out, his voice a pathetic squeak against the heavy clinking of silver and crystal.
None of the dozen relatives seated around the grand mahogany table said a word. Uncles, aunts, and cousins averted their eyes, pretending to inspect their wine glasses or cutting into their steaks with calculated indifference. They knew Lavinia and Damian ruled this household with an iron fist whenever the syndicate’s supreme patriarch was away.
Heavy double doors at the far end of the hall swung open with a muffled click.
Syndicate patriarch Antonio Bellaforte stepped into the room.
Fresh from a grueling private council session with capos from across the city, Antonio’s tall, imposing silhouette cut through the room like a blade. His dark suit was immaculate, his silver-streaked hair brushed back, and his presence alone instantly silenced the murmurs at the table.
He took three steps forward—and then he froze.
Antonio’s dark, piercing eyes locked onto the far end of the table. His stride halted instantly. The air in the magnificent hall seemed to drop twenty degrees. His broad shoulders grew rigid, and his entire frame became terrifyingly, deathly still.
He saw his son.
He saw the velvet sash binding Lucas to the chair. He saw the empty plate in the corner. He saw the water glass pushed far out of reach. And he saw the tear-streaked, bruised-looking face of his six-year-old boy.
Before anyone could draw a breath, Lucas spotted his father. A fresh sob broke from the boy’s chest, small and heartbreaking.
“Daddy...” Lucas cried out, his voice cracking. “Daddy, make them stop. They... they do this every time you go to the council room. Grandma ties me up, and Damian throws away my food.”
Antonio didn't blink.
He crossed the length of the dining hall in silent, deliberate, predatory strides. Each footstep on the polished hardwood floor sounded like the tolling of a funeral bell. The relatives seated near him instinctively shrank back into their chairs, holding their breath as the patriarch approached.
Reaching his son's chair, Antonio didn't speak a single word to Lavinia. With one sharp, vicious snap of his fingers, he tore the heavy velvet sash free, shredding the knot with sheer physical strength. He scooped little Lucas up into his powerful arms, pulling the boy safely against his chest, pressing Lucas’s face into his shoulder as the child sobbed into his lapel.
Damian, fueled by sheer arrogance and a desperate need to maintain control, stepped casually closer to the patriarch and extended a hand toward Lucas’s shoulder, as if to pull the boy back down.
“Now hold on, Antonio,” Damian smirked, shaking his head. “The boy was acting out—”
Antonio’s hand shot out like a striking viper.
He caught Damian’s forearm in mid-air with crushing, bone-splintering force. A sharp gasp escaped Damian’s lips as the patriarch violently wrenched his arm away, shoving him off balance.
“Touch my son again with those filthy hands,” Antonio whispered, his voice a deep, vibrating rumble that chilled the marrow of every person in the room, “and I will break every bone in your body.”
Damian stumbled back, his face flushing with humiliated fury. He recovered his posture quickly, glaring defiantly around the table. He threw his hands up and sneered, “Relax, everyone! We all agreed on this! The boy lacks discipline, and every single person sitting at this table agreed he needed to be taught a lesson!”
Antonio turned his head slowly.
His cold, unblinking gaze swept over the relatives who had remained silent. Lavinia sat frozen in her high-backed chair, her ancient face suddenly pale. The aunts and uncles averted their eyes, sudden cowards trembling under the terrifying wrath of the man who commanded half the syndicates on the Eastern Seaboard.
Damian, blinded by his own foolish pride, laughed nervously and took another step forward, giving Antonio a sharp, disrespectful shove in the chest.
“You’re too soft on him, Antonio,” Damian scoffed. “We did what had to—”
Before Damian’s hand could even drop back to his side, Antonio exploded into motion.
The patriarch grabbed Damian by the back of his expensive Italian wool jacket and the waistband of his trousers. With terrifying, effortless strength, Antonio hoisted the full-grown man off his feet, carried him across the dining hall in four rapid strides, and hurled him bodily through the open double doors.
CRASH.
Damian slammed hard against the wall of the carpeted corridor outside, tumbling into a sprawling heap.
Two massive, expressionless bodyguards stationed in the hallway instantly stepped forward, standing side-by-side in the doorway like twin monoliths of granite, blocking Damian’s return with absolute, unyielding finality.
Antonio turned slowly back toward the banquet table.
He cradled his son securely with one arm, while his free hand rested inside his jacket, resting near the butt of his hidden sidearm. His jaw was clenched so tight the muscles pulsed along his cheek.
He slowly examined each relative who had sat in silence while his only son was humiliated, starved, and bound like a prisoner.
“You all agreed?” Antonio’s voice was a low, terrifying growl that echoed off the vaulted ceilings. “You all sat here and watched?”
Not a single person moved. Fear drained the last remaining drops of color from every face at the table.
Antonio took a step forward, his eyes boring into the soul of every coward in the room.

“Then stand up,” the patriarch commanded softly. “If anyone here believes my son deserved this... stand up right now and tell me to my face.”
The dining hall fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
