Chapter 4 - Midnight CouncilThe grandfather clock in the downstairs hallway chimed twelve times, its deep, resonant gongs echoing through the cavernous marble corridors of the Ashford-Bellaforte estate.

Down in the subterranean syndicate vault—a reinforced concrete chamber hidden behind a false bookshelf in Antonio’s private study—four men sat around a heavy steel table.
The air smelled of gun oil, aged bourbon, and damp concrete.
Vance, Antonio’s chief enforcer and head of internal security, leaned back in his leather chair, flipping through a thick digital tablet containing years of surveillance and financial logs. Across from him sat Marcus, the syndicate’s primary legal counsel, and Sal, the veteran capo who controlled the downtown docks.
At the head of the table sat Antonio, swirling a glass of amber bourbon, his face illuminated by the harsh overhead fluorescent light.
“You wanted us here at midnight, Boss,” Vance said, setting the tablet down on the steel table. “Word downstairs is that there was an... incident at the dinner table tonight. Lavinia is locked in her west wing chambers, and Damian spent the last two hours screaming in his rooms after the guards threw him out.”
Antonio took a slow sip of his bourbon, setting the glass down with a sharp clink.
“Damian crossed a line tonight,” Antonio said, his voice dangerously calm. “And so did my mother. But what concerns me more is the silence of the rest of the family. Uncle Vincent, Aunt Beatrice, the cousins—they sat there and watched a six-year-old child be tied to a chair and starved. They didn't just allow it; they enabled it.”
Marcus adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, sliding a printed financial summary across the table toward Antonio.
“It goes deeper than domestic discipline, Antonio,” Marcus said gravely. “While you were expanding our shipping routes into Europe over the past eighteen months, Damian and Lavinia have been quietly consolidating financial control over your personal domestic accounts. They’ve been reallocating syndicate dividends meant for Lucas’s trust fund into private offshore shell companies controlled by Damian.”
Antonio’s eyes narrowed into razor-thin slits. The amber liquid in his glass seemed to ripple as his grip tightened on the crystal.
“Show me,” Antonio commanded.
Marcus tapped the tablet screen, projecting a holographic financial flowchart onto the center of the steel table. Lines of red and blue data linked Bellaforte shipping fronts to shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands—corporations whose sole beneficiary was Damian Bellaforte.
“They weren't just trying to bully your son,” Marcus continued quietly. “They were laying the financial groundwork to declare you legally unfit, sideline you through a family council vote, and take over the domestic syndicate leadership with Damian as the proxy head.”
Silence fell over the subterranean vault. Even Vance, a man who had seen every variety of betrayal in the underworld, shook his head in disgust.
“Cousins stealing from a six-year-old orphan’s trust,” Vance muttered, spitting onto the concrete floor. “That’s a new low, even for Damian.”
“It’s not just Damian,” Antonio said, standing up from his chair. He walked slowly around the steel table, his footsteps echoing in the enclosed room. “Every relative sitting at that table tonight knew about the embezzlement. Every single one of them kept their mouths shut because they expected to share the spoils once Damian took over.”
“What do you want us to do, Boss?” Sal asked, leaning forward, his weathered hands resting flat on the table. “Do you want me to take a crew to Damian’s quarters tonight and clear him out?”
“No,” Antonio replied coldly. “Violence in the dark is too good for them. I want a public reckoning. Tomorrow evening, I am calling a full family assembly in the grand ballroom. Every uncle, aunt, cousin, and affiliate will be in attendance.”
“And Lavinia?” Vance asked carefully.
“My mother will sit in the front row,” Antonio said, his voice dropping an octave. “And she will watch as every single pillar of the financial empire she helped Damian build is dismantled piece by piece right in front of her eyes.”
May you like
“And legally?” Marcus asked.
“Legally, financially, and personally,” Antonio stated, turning toward the vault door. “They thought they could use my absence to dictate terms in my own house. By tomorrow night, they won't even own the clothes on their backs.”
