Chapter 10 - The New SanctuaryThree months later.

The autumn leaves had turned vibrant shades of orange and gold across the courtyard below.
My downtown apartment sublease concluded successfully, and Dr. Thorne moved out after paying for the door frame repairs, leaving me with a clean, profitable investment property that now generated steady monthly rental income.
My independent auditing firm expanded, landing two major healthcare contracts that doubled my annual revenue. For the first time in my life, my hard work was building my own future—not funding someone else’s reckless mistakes.
One Saturday morning, I hosted a small housewarming brunch on my condo’s terrace.
There were no screaming children running through the hall. No condescending aunts judging my furniture choices. No mother demanding I surrender my hard-earned peace for the sake of "family."
Just Ethan, my closest friends from work, and my dedicated team of auditors who had supported me through my recovery.
As we toasted with mimosas under the bright morning sun, my phone chimed on the table.
It was a text from an unknown number. I opened it.
It was a photo of a small handwritten note from my mother:
“Camille, I am living at the Pines Residence now. Vanessa doesn't visit me much anymore. I know I made terrible mistakes. Can we please talk?”
I looked at the message for a long moment. I felt no rage, no desire for vengeance, but also no urge to sacrifice myself ever again.
I didn't delete the text. I didn't reply either.
I simply locked my phone screen, set it face-down on the table, and picked up my glass to join my guests in laughter.
I had survived thirty-seven staples, a family of parasites, and decades of emotional manipulation.

My home was finally mine. My life was finally mine.
And no one would ever take it from me again.
