Chapter 2 - The Moving Truck at DawnAt 7:45 AM the next morning, the morning air was crisp and chilly.

I sat in a comfortable armchair in my living room, wrapped in a fleece blanket, nursing a warm cup of chamomile tea. Beside me on the glass coffee table sat my official closing folder containing the certified deed, my property tax receipt, and a freshly notarized copy of my building's strict residency rules.

At precisely 7:58 AM, a loud, rumbling noise vibrated through the quiet courtyard below.

I pulled myself up slowly, supporting my midsection with a pillow, and looked out the floor-to-ceiling window. A large yellow twenty-foot moving truck was reversing into the resident-only loading zone, blocking two private parking stalls.

Vanessa stepped out of the passenger side, wearing oversized sunglasses and holding a venti iced coffee. Greg climbed out from the driver’s seat, looking disheveled, while their two children—eight-year-old Mason and ten-year-old Chloe—immediately began jumping out of the cab and running wildly toward the main glass entrance. Behind them came my mother’s silver sedan.

They looked triumphant. They looked like a family taking possession of what they believed was rightfully theirs.

Vanessa marched up to the main lobby intercom panel and buzzed my unit repeatedly.

BZZZ. BZZZ. BZZZ.

I didn't press the unlock button. I didn't even move toward the speaker.

Down in the courtyard, Greg pulled open the back shutter of the moving truck, revealing a chaotic pile of mattresses, plastic storage bins, and bicycle frames.

“Camille! Open the gate!” Vanessa shouted into her phone as she dialed my number. “Greg needs to unload the heavy furniture before the parking enforcement gets annoying! Stop playing games!”

“I told you yesterday, Vanessa,” I replied smoothly through the phone. “You are not moving into my apartment.”

“We are already here with a full truck!” she screamed, her voice echoing up the brick facade of the building. “Mom is here too! Are you seriously going to make your own mother stand outside in the cold?”

“You brought her. You can drive her back.”

“You little snake!” my mother’s voice boomed in the background as she grabbed Vanessa’s phone. “Camille, you open this door this instant! Your sister is struggling! Family helps family! You have more than enough space!”

“I am recovering from major surgery, Mom,” I said quietly. “I have thirty-seven metal staples holding my stomach together.”

“Pain medication makes people selfish!” my mother snapped back. “We are coming up!”

“No,” I said. “Look behind you.”

Down in the driveway, two sleek black security sedans pulled up, blocking the moving truck from both sides.

Four towering security guards in crisp charcoal uniforms stepped out, led by Ethan Vance holding an electronic tablet and a official clipboard.

Vanessa, Greg, and my mother froze in dead silence as Ethan walked directly toward them.
