Chapter 2 - Shadows of the HudsonThe silence in the grand hallway heavy as wet wool. Rosa did not pull away, but her grip on Lily tightened until her knuckles turned as white as the marble beneath her knees.

“Answer me, Rosa,” Alessandro repeated, his voice barely above a whisper, yet vibrating with a raw, dangerous strain that made the crystal chandelier high above seem to vibrate.

“Because if I told you, she would never have been safe,” Rosa choked out, her voice raspy, stripped of the deferential tone she had cultivated for four long years. She looked up at him, her eyes burning through her tears. “Look at where we are, Don Alessandro. Look at this house. Look at the men with guns stationed at the gates. Look at the woman you brought here to be your wife. My daughter would have been nothing more than a bargaining chip, a target, or a bastard locked inside a golden cage!”

Alessandro felt the words strike him like physical blows. Every word was an indictment of the life he led, the legacy he inherited, and the cold monster the world believed him to be.

He didn't yell. He didn't order his men to take the child. Instead, he reached down, took Rosa by her arms, and pulled her gently to her feet. He looked down into her pale face, noting the faint dark circles under her eyes, the worn fabric of her maid's uniform, and the absolute, unyielding defiance that burned in her gaze.

“She has my mother’s eyes, Rosa,” Alessandro murmured, his thumb instinctively brushing a stray strand of dark hair from her forehead—a gesture so tender and familiar it made Rosa gasp softly, flashing back to a single, chaotic night four years ago that neither of them had ever dared to speak of again. “I knew it the first day I saw her in the kitchen corridor. I tried to convince myself I was hallucinating. I tried to tell myself I was just a lonely man seeing ghosts.”

“She is my child, Alessandro,” Rosa said, her voice dropping into a desperate plea. “I have washed your floors, folded your clothes, and kept my head down. I never asked you for a single cent. I never asked for your name. All I wanted was a quiet corner for my daughter to grow up without the blood of the Moretti family touching her.”

“It’s too late for that,” Alessandro said softly, looking at the sleeping child in her arms. Lily’s breathing was soft and rhythmic now, her tiny face pressed securely into Rosa’s collarbone, her hand still loosely clutching the gold button. “The moment Isabella raised her voice at her, the moment my staff saw me kneel before her—her existence ceased to be a secret. Do you really think Vincent Romano’s daughter will leave this alone? She will call her father by noon.”

Rosa’s face went dead white. “Vincent Romano…”

“The Romanos don't play by rules, Rosa. You know that,” Alessandro’s eyes hardened, the ice returning to his gaze, though his hand remained infinitely gentle as he adjusted the small blanket over Lily’s back. “If Isabella suspects this child is my blood—my heir—Lily becomes the easiest way to break me. I cannot protect you if you stay in the maid's quarters. I cannot protect her if you pretend she belongs to someone else.”

“So what are you saying?” Rosa whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

“I am saying your days as a maid in this house are over,” Alessandro declared. He turned toward the shadows of the archway where Mr. Bruno had been waiting silently. “Bruno.”

The old butler stepped forward instantly, his face solemn, though a faint glint of fierce pride shone in his eyes. “Yes, Boss?”

“Move Rosa and Lily into the east wing master guest suite. The one overlooking the gardens. Clear out all of Isabella’s personal items from that floor and place them in the carriage house.”

“Alessandro, no!” Rosa gasped, stepping back. “You can't do that! Isabella is your fiancée! The Romano family will take this as a declaration of war!”

Alessandro looked over his shoulder at the grand staircase where Isabella had vanished minutes earlier. His expression was as cold and unyielding as the winter river outside.

“Let them,” Alessandro said quietly. “Vincent Romano thought he was marrying his daughter into my empire to steal my territory. He didn't realize that the moment anyone threatens my child, I don't negotiate. I destroy.”
