Chapter 6 - The Broken TruceThe silence in the foyer was deafening.

Vincent Romano stared into Alessandro’s eyes, searching for any sign of a bluff, any hesitation, any hint of financial panic. He found none. All he saw was the cold, relentless madness of a father protecting his own blood—a madness that made the young Don far more dangerous than his father had ever been.

Slowly, painfully, Vincent raised his hands in a gesture of surrender.

“Lower your weapons,” Vincent growled to his bodyguards through gritted teeth.

The Romano men slowly re-holstered their guns. Alessandro released his grip on Vincent’s tie, stepping back and smoothing the lapels of his own suit jacket with cold precision.

“Get your daughter and get off my property,” Alessandro said softly. “You have two hours to clear your personal belongings from the carriage house. If I see a single Romano vehicle past six o'clock, my men will open fire.”

Isabella looked at Alessandro, her face pale with shock and embarrassment. “You’re ruining everything, Alessandro! For a maid?! She washed your floors! She’s nobody!”

Alessandro didn't even look at her. “Bruno, escort them to the gates.”

“This isn't over, Moretti!” Vincent yelled as his men pulled him back toward the heavy glass doors. “You just declared war on Chicago! You won't survive the month!”

“I’ve survived thirty-eight years in this family, Vincent,” Alessandro called out as the doors began to close. “I’ll survive you.”

As the heavy iron gates echoed shut in the distance, Alessandro stood alone in the grand hallway. The silence returned, but the energy in the house had completely transformed. The heavy weight of a looming war hung in the air, but inside Alessandro’s chest, a strange, unyielding warmth had taken root for the first time in four years.

He walked up the grand staircase, his heavy boots making deliberate sounds against the hardwood. He stopped outside the master guest suite, pulled out his master key, and unlocked the double oak doors.

Inside, Rosa was standing near the crib, holding a heavy bronze lamp like a club, her body positioned defensively in front of Lily. When she saw Alessandro step through the doorway, the lamp slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the thick rug.

“Are you hurt?” she gasped, searching his face and clothing for any sign of blood.

“I’m fine,” Alessandro said, closing the door behind him. He walked across the room and stopped in front of her. “The Romanos are gone.”

Rosa let out a shuddering breath, her knees giving out. Alessandro moved instantly, catching her before she hit the floor, lifting her into his arms, and carrying her over to the velvet armchair near the fireplace.

He sat down, keeping her in his lap, his strong arms wrapping securely around her waist. Rosa buried her face in his neck, her chest heaving as silent, trembling sobs finally broke through her formidable composure.

“I was so scared,” she whispered, her hands clinging to his shoulders. “I thought they were going to kill you.”

“No one is killing anyone,” Alessandro murmured, pressing his lips to her crown, breathing in the scent of lavender and soap that had haunted his dreams for four long years. “I told you, Rosa. I’m not letting you go again.”

From the bed behind them, a small, high-pitched voice broke through the quiet room.

“Mama?”
