The sliding glass door clicked open, and Maya stepped out onto the deck, holding two glasses of iced tea, handing one to me.

"Penny for your thoughts, counselor?" she asked, leaning against the railing beside me.

I smiled, taking a sip of the cold tea and looking out toward the horizon where the first evening stars were beginning to twinkle through the dusk.

"Just thinking about how heavy ten pounds feels," I said softly.

Maya frowned in confusion. "Ten pounds? What do you mean?"

"Dr. Okafor told me I couldn't lift anything over ten pounds when I broke my arm," I murmured, my smile widening into a triumphant grin. "He was wrong."

May you like

"Oh?" Maya laughed. "What can you lift now?"

"Everything," I said, raising my glass to toast the quiet, beautiful night. "Absolutely everything."
