Chapter 5 - Playing the TapeMason lunged forward, grabbing my good arm with a grip tight enough to bruise. "Brianna, stop this right now! You're humiliating me in front of my entire firm!"

"Unhand her, Mr. Hayes," one of the sheriff's deputies commanded, stepping forward and placing a heavy hand on Mason's shoulder, forcing him back.

Mason stumbled, his carefully curated composure completely shattering. He looked around the room, seeing the cold, judging stares of his boss, the CEO of Vanguard Capital, who was watching from the edge of the group with arms crossed and a face like thunder.

"Mason," the CEO rumbled, his voice cold as arctic ice. "What is the meaning of this? Concealed corporate accounts? Secret relocation bonuses? Are you embezzling or committing fraud?"

"No, Arthur, I swear to God, it's just a bitter divorce tactic!" Mason stammered, sweating profusely under the blazing chandelier lights.

"It’s not a tactic, Arthur," Victoria Vance said smoothly, snapping her briefcase shut. "It’s documented financial fraud totaling $1.4 million dollars funneled away from marital property. And that’s just the financial side."

Victoria turned to me, offering a polite nod. "Brianna, would you care to share the audio exhibit?"

My heart pounded against my ribs, but my fingers were steady as I pulled my smartphone from my evening clutch. I tapped the screen, connecting via Bluetooth to the ballroom’s overhead PA system through an auxiliary port Victoria’s tech team had quietly hooked up five minutes prior.

I pressed play.

The pristine, high-fidelity audio of the nursery echoed off the crystal chandeliers, rolling across the silent ballroom with devastating clarity.

"What's for dinner, Brianna?" Mason's voice rang out, arrogant and demanding.

"Dinner? Mason, my arm is broken in two places! I haven't eaten all day... Please, just pick Liam up off the floor!" my exhausted, weeping voice replied.

"I know your arm hurts," the audio recording of Mason sneered. "But I worked ten hours at the office, Brianna. I don't walk into this house to clock into another shift."

"They are your sons! Please, just pick Liam up off the floor!"

"Moms don't get sick days, Brianna," Mason's voice echoed through the grand hotel ballroom, loud, distinct, and dripping with cruel indifference. "You're home all day. Figure it out."

The recording clicked off.

For five seconds, the ballroom was so quiet you could hear ice melting in a glass across the room. Every executive, every investor, every high-society wife stared at Mason with naked, unadulterated disgust. Neglect of infants combined with grotesque psychological abuse of a disabled spouse—it was career suicide on a nuclear scale.

Mason stood frozen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "That... that was edited! That’s out of context! She trapped me!"

"It’s fourteen hours of continuous audio, Mr. Hayes," Victoria stated calmly. "Captured by the very wife you thought you had successfully broken."

The CEO of Vanguard Capital stepped forward, his face dark as a thundercloud. "Mason, clean out your desk by Monday morning. You are terminated with cause for gross moral turpitude and corporate liability. Your integrity is radioactive, and you are finished in this city."

Mason collapsed against a cocktail table, sending plastic champagne flutes crashing to the floor. His multi-million-dollar career, his social standing, his carefully engineered life—all of it obliterated in less than sixty seconds.
